π Honoring Heritage, Creating Connection: Our Indigenous Peopleβs Day Family Guide is Here! π
Happy Friday, Dayton Public Schools Families!
This Monday, October 12, 2026, we observe Indigenous People's Dayβa vital moment to reflect on the history, culture, and resilience of the Indigenous communities that have shaped our region.
At Dayton Public Schools, we believe learning is a shared family journey. We are beyond thrilled to share our definitive "Indigenous People's Day: A Family Guide"! π Weβve broken down complex learning into three fun, accessible, and totally achievable actions for you and your students.
Weβve teamed up with our favorite students, Dylan and Diamond, to show you the way!
Inside Your Family Guide: The 1-2-3 Family Action Plan!
1. π RECOGNIZE & ACKNOWLEDGE:
Transitions from screen-time can be tough, but letβs transition into mindful connection! Start by acknowledging that we live on the traditional lands of the Miami and Shawnee peoples. Talk about what a "sense of belonging" means when learning with confidence in your local community.
2. π LEARN & SUPPORT TOGETHER:
This is our favorite step! Make this Saturday a Community Saturday and visit the library or an event! Or better yet, make a First Chapter Friday family night (like Diamond and Dylan!).
Find Native-authored books to read aloud together!
Watch a short educational video about Indigenous history.
Support local Native-owned businesses and artisans this weekend. How are you celebrating cultural responsiveness?
3. π€ BOOST YOUR BRAIN & BUILD GREAT HABITS:
Good habits tonight mean great results tomorrow! Let's build reading stamina! When we learn with confidence, we can do our best! Use Deuceβs time-management hacks: set a visual timer for 20 minutes and actually read a validated, fun story together! Check our Google Classroom Caregiver Lounge for amazing resource lists for this specific goal.
π Letβs build lasting friendships and learn with confidence!
Letβs turn this Sunday night prep into a positive family goal! Letβs show how our community values connection and empathy. What Indigenous People's Day resource are you most excited to use? πππ
