Come find out for yourself if you’re “into dams” at our Englewood Dam tour on Friday, October 23!

Meet the people who care for MCD’s flood protection system, explore the dam’s history, and learn how it holds back floodwater to help protect communities downstream.

Then you can give your own dam review. ⭐

Flood protection needs attention even when the river is calm.

Our crew is working along the Great Miami River in Miamisburg, where silt has covered up over the rock at the base of the levee and high water has washed out a few areas. They’re clearing the silt and making repairs to help keep the river from eroding the levee.

The rock path also gives our tractor and brush hog a route along the river to mow and maintain the levee without driving through city streets.

When the Great Miami rises, the levee helps keep floodwater away from Miamisburg’s homes, businesses, and streets. Taking care of it now helps it do that job when the community needs it most.

All of us at MCD are saddened by Bob’s passing. His tireless care for our region’s land, wetlands, and water leaves a lasting legacy. Our heartfelt sympathy goes to his family, friends, and the B-W Greenway community.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our good friend Bob Jurick. Just last week, we were together at our fall awards celebration, sharing an evening with people who care about the places and communities Bob worked so hard to protect.

Bob was one of our very special 2018 Partners for the Environment Lifetime Achievement Award recipients (photo below). His lifetime of service included preserving land, protecting wetlands, championing local food, and helping others find practical ways to care for our planet.

As a founder and longtime leader of B-W Greenway Community Land Trust, Bob helped turn conservation opportunities into lasting protection. He helped secure Pearl’s Fen and advocated for fresh, affordable food in Fairborn. He and Beverly also protected their own land for future generations, putting the commitment he asked of others into practice at home.

Bob kept showing up and doing the work. Our region is better because of him, and his care for its future will live on in the land he helped preserve and the people he inspired.

We send our heartfelt sympathy to Beverly, his family, and his many friends. We will miss you, Bob. Thank you for everything you gave.

Protecting our region’s water starts with understanding what’s beneath our feet. 💧

The Great Miami River Buried Valley Aquifer stores groundwater in layers of sand and gravel beneath our region. It’s a vital source of drinking water, and understanding its connection to rivers and wetlands helps us care for this shared resource.

That’s part of the water stewardship work we do.

University of Dayton geology students recently joined our staff in the field to support a study of how groundwater and surface water interact. Students explored information from a well the Miami Conservancy District drilled to bedrock this summer and placed monitoring equipment in wells to help with the research.

Our staff also demonstrated how we measure water levels and collect groundwater samples, connecting classroom learning with hands-on water stewardship.

Through monitoring, research, education, and partnerships, we are working to help protect the water our communities depend on—today and for the future.

🚲 Trail maintenance begins today in Dayton

Our crews are starting crack-sealing work on the Great Miami River Recreation Trail in Dayton today. The trail will remain open, but trail users may encounter crews and equipment along the route.

Work will begin near the Eastwood MetroPark area and move south along the east side of the river toward East River Road in Moraine. Crews will then move to the other side of the river and continue working on Miami Conservancy District maintained trail sections through Dayton.

The work is expected to take a few weeks. Crews will have “We Are Working” signs posted on both sides of the work area and will do their best to remain visible and stay out of the way of trail users.

If you’re biking, walking, or running through a work area, please slow down, watch for crews and equipment, and give workers a little extra room.

Thanks for your patience while we take care of the trail!

TRAIL IS NOW OPEN!

Franklin trail detour: We are starting work Tuesday, September 29, to address erosion along the Great Miami River.

The Great Miami River Recreation Trail is closed for approximately two weeks between Second and Sixth streets. Trail users can follow the marked detour across River Street to the sidewalk, which adds about 50 feet to the route. Please slow down and watch for signs and crews.

Riverbank erosion can gradually wear away the ground beside the trail. This work will stabilize the bank and help protect the trail for the people who walk, ride and run here.
