Last night, firefighters from Dayton Fire District teamed up with instructors from the Oregon Department of the Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) for hands-on Flammable Liquids and Gas (FLAG) training!

DPSST brought several specialized training props to create realistic emergency scenarios that our firefighters could encounter right here in our community. Training scenarios included:

🔥 Managing fires impinging on propane tanks and preventing a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding V***r Explosion).

⛽ Safely shutting off natural gas meters during emergencies.

🚛 Responding to transportation-related emergencies involving flammable liquids and gases.

🏭 Recognizing and managing fires and chemical hazards at local farms, homes and businesses.

This type of hands-on training helps our firefighters build the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to safely manage complex and potentially dangerous incidents. With farms, homes, businesses, transportation routes, and propane systems throughout our service area, preparing for these types of emergencies is an important part of protecting our community.

A big THANK YOU to the DPSST instructors for bringing these valuable training resources to Dayton and helping our firefighters prepare for the unexpected!

📢 ODOT is seeking public input on a proposed roundabout at OR 233/SE Lafayette Highway and OR 18.

ODOT is considering a roundabout at this intersection as a potential way to help reduce crash risks and improve safety in the area.

Your experience matters. ODOT is asking community members to complete a short survey between October 1 and October 25 and share:

• How you prefer to receive project information
• Whether you are a farmer who lives or works near the project area
• How you use the intersections in the area
• How temporary road closures and detours could impact you during construction
• Your experiences and concerns about traveling through the area
• Other thoughts about the proposed project

If you regularly travel this intersection, live or work nearby, or could be affected by construction, please take a few minutes to provide your input directly to ODOT.

🔥 TRAINING FOR THE NEXT EMERGENCY 🔥

Dayton Fire District recently partnered with the North Valley Prescription Burn Association to assist a local landowner with a prescribed burn on approximately 7 acres of open land.

While wildland fire season may be winding down, your Dayton firefighters continue to train for the next emergency — whether that comes this fall or during next year's fire season.

This prescribed burn provided an excellent hands-on training opportunity and allowed our firefighters to practice and observe:

🔥 Wildland fire behavior and how fire conditions evolve
🔥 Using fire as a suppression tool
🔥 Operating fire apparatus over uneven and challenging terrain
🔥 Rural water supply and water shuttle operations
🔥 Coordinating crews and resources during a wildland operation

Prescribed burning can also provide significant ecological benefits for the landowner and the surrounding landscape, making this a valuable opportunity for both the property owner and our firefighters.

A huge THANK YOU to the North Valley Prescription Burn Association, the landowner, and everyone else who helped make this training opportunity possible.
