Throughout October, Volusia County Ocean Rescue Lifeguards have been completing hyper-realistic training to prepare for drowning calls when backup units are delayed or extended. The training began with a vigorous exercise to raise the respondersโ€™ heart rates. As soon as they completed the exercise, they were dispatched to a simulated drowning call. Ocean Rescue Lifeguards then completed the rescue and performed a โ€œfull codeโ€ using the necessary Basic Life Support (BLS) equipment. A full code occurs when the patient is breathless and has no pulse.

It is crucial that Volusia County Ocean Rescue Lifeguards are prepared for every situation. This training helps ensure they can make critical decisions and provide lifesaving care under pressure.

๐Ÿ’จ Windy Weather and Rough Surf Expected This Weekend!
An approaching cold front is expected to bring strong winds and rough surf to Volusia County beginning Saturday, Oct. 17, with wind gusts potentially reaching 40 to 45 mph and breaking waves reaching 8 to 12 feet.

As conditions change, here are a few things to keep in mind:
๐Ÿ–๏ธ Thinking About Hitting the Beach? Dangerous rip currents and elevated tides are expected, which may affect beach driving and result in temporary closures of vehicular beach ramps. In anticipation of the rough surf, the County also plans to remove trash receptacles and portable restrooms from the beach to prevent damage or loss. Always follow the guidance of County lifeguards.

๐Ÿ๏ธ Planning to Ride? Motorcyclists should be mindful of wind gusts, particularly when crossing bridges or traveling along exposed roadways. Take extra care and adjust your riding to the conditions.

๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ Planning Outdoor Activities? Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible, although the heaviest rainfall is currently expected to remain south of Volusia County.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Stay Informed! The Volusia Beaches app provides real-time beach and ocean conditions, staffed lifeguard tower locations, and vehicular beach ramp status. The Volusia Emergency Management app offers severe weather alerts and other helpful resources.

Breezy weather and rough surf could continue into early next week, so keep an eye on changing conditions and enjoy your weekend safely!
