Daylight Savings Time is fast approaching on November 1, 2026. Remember when changing those clocks, you check your smoke alarms in your homes and outbuildings, along with replacing batteries. If you do not have a functioning smoke alarm and need one, please let us know. Enjoy the rest of your week!

As fire prevention week comes to an end, we encourage folks who use wood to heat with to have their flu cleaned each year and inspected by a chimney expert of your choice. Soot builds up in chimneys. Soot build up may contribute to fires in the chimney and spread beyond it and into the roof and attic space. Have a good weekend everyone.

Yesterday and today's fire prevention tips.

It's important to have an updated and charged fire extinguisher in your home, garage, car, boat or wherever you choose. A good stop on a small fire will slow down progress. See the image for reference on what types of fires to use an extinguisher on. Remember the acronym PASS, for Pull (the pin), Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep from side to side.

Our second tip recommends keeping electrical cords free of entanglement. Do not route cords under rugs. Do not set tables, appliances on cords. Do not plug one power strip into another power strip. Do not plug an appliance into a power strip... all of these mentions can cause shorts and overloads, possibly causing a fire.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's tip as fire prevention week wraps up.

The DeKalb Fire Protection District is very fortunate to have a Junior Firefighter Program. The program began in the 1990s. This program allows high-school aged students to learn about the fire service and encourages them be involved in service to their community. Today, we wish our very own Jr. FF Wyatt Griffin a very happy birthday. We hope you enjoy your day!

Today's message in conjunction with Fire Prevention Week is about smoke alarms.

According to the NFPA, the death rate per 1,000 reported home fires is roughly 60% lower in properties equipped with working smoke alarms compared to homes with no alarms or alarms that fail to sound.

While there is no limit to the number of smoke alarms you can install in your home, there should be one on each level. Smoke alarm batteries should be replaced twice a year. Some alarms have a ten-year battery life, but you should still routinely test them.

Nearly 3 out of 5 home fire deaths (roughly 59%) occur in homes that either have no smoke alarms at all or have alarms that failed to operate.

If you do not have a functioning smoke detector in your home, please call us. We'll get you one!

It's Fire Prevention Week. Today's message encourages you always have a family escape plan. A family fire escape plan is important because a fire can turn a familiar home into a dangerous environment within minutes. When every family member knows what to do before a fire happens, there is less confusion, less hesitation, and a much better chance of everyone getting out safely. A simple rule to teach the family

Get Low. Get Out. Stay Out.

Get Low — Stay below smoke.
Get Out — Use your safest available exit.
Stay Out — Go to the family meeting place and never re-enter the burning home.

A good family escape plan should be drawn out, discussed with everyone, and practiced at least twice a year. The goal isn't simply to have a plan—it's to make sure everyone can execute it when seconds matter.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's message!

Earlier this evening, fire crews from DeKalb Fire Protection District, South Central Buchanan County Fire Department and Southwest Buchanan County Fire Protection District responded to a structure fire north of DeKalb. The non-residential structure was quickly brought under control. The were no injuries or damage to adjacent homes. Thank you to our mutual aid partners for providing manpower and tanker support and to Evergy for responding promptly to disconnect the service so fire personnel could safely work. Thanks also to Buchanan County EMS for staging at our scene and being ready incase medical intervention was needed.

Each year, our inventory of SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) are flow tested to ensure breathing equipment meets manufacturer specifications and safety standards. Breathing apparatus for firefighters is the most critical piece of personal protective equipment (PPE) for a firefighter, serving as their primary life-support system in hazardous environments. It provides a reliable supply of clean air, allowing firefighters to breathe safely while operating in dangerous situations. Yesterday, our inventory of eight SCBA were tested and all passed their inspections. Thank you, Municipal Emergency Services for taking care of us again this year.
