🩷 THINK PINK! Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🩷

On October 20, our Kemper County MCV group hosted a “Think Pink” Grab & Go Event at Pilgrims in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

They prepared and distributed 50 grab-and-go bags filled with valuable breast cancer awareness information and snacks.
This event was a wonderful opportunity to spread awareness, encourage early detection, and remind everyone of the importance of taking care of their health.

A big THANK YOU to our MCV members for their time, dedication, and continued commitment to making a difference in our community!

🩷 Early Detection Saves Lives! 🩷

If you need instant impact, then choose a plant in full flower. To extend the display period, select plants that have tight flower buds with just a little bit of color showing. Over time, the buds will open up, making the flowers last longer.

Always keep your fall mums in full sun. This promotes the very best flower opening and color development.

Keep your mums consistently watered. This is a greater challenge when growing your mums in containers. If the soil is dry, it’s time to water your mums. Do not let them wilt. Once a flowering fall mum is water-stressed, it turns off flowering. This doesn’t necessarily kill the plant, but the flowering will not recover.

Don’t water the foliage, but direct water to the base of the plant and continue until water starts to flow from the bottom of the container. Wet leaves make it easy for fungal growth to set in, making plants look bad.

What do you call these? There’s so many nicknames! Hurricane lilies, naked ladies, surprise lilies, resurrection lilies, spider lilies, etc.

Fall brings the appearance of one of the most fascinating flowering plants we can enjoy in our landscapes and gardens...Lycoris! You might recognize them as those flowers that seem to pop up out nowhere.

Now, we realize that most gardeners don’t call this plant by its botanical name.

Most of the common names for Lycoris rely on the fact that this plant has a unique way of growing. In the early spring, strap-like foliage appears and looks very much like daffodil foliage, but without any flowering. It disappears after a few weeks.

Then, in the fall, tall flower stalks seem to magically appear and surprise many folks.
Lycoris flowers are very fine-textured and delicate. They remind many folks of the spidery flowers of our spring-blooming native azaleas.

In Mississippi, we primarily see the red Lycoris radiata, which is a long-lived heirloom and a popular pass-along plant with gardeners. There are also beautiful yellow selections and even a white variety.

There are many other Lycoris species, but most need a colder winter than we typically have in Mississippi.

Plant Lycoris bulbs in the fall. Some independent garden centers will have the bulbs for sale, but if you have friends with Lycoris growing in their landscapes, ask if you can dig up a few to take home. Most gardeners will be willing to share this wonderful plant.

Plant in the full sun. Since Lycoris has such a unique growth habit, be careful to choose a site where the emerging flowers won’t get trampled or cut with the lawn mower.

Whatever you call Lycoris, this is one plant everyone should have at least a couple of in their landscape. They’re easy to care for. Proof of this is the fact that they are commonly seen growing completely unattended at old home sites long after the house is gone!!
