Staff from De Pere Public Works recently toured our local recycling facility to get a better look at what happens to the materials we put in our carts and to help us better educate our residents.

During the tour, we saw some items that don't belong in curbside recycling, including:

❌ Plastic bags and film (the biggest culprit!)
❌ “Interesting” items like shoes, clothing, a bike frame, and wind chimes 👀

Some of these items may be recyclable through other programs or facilities, but they should not be placed in your curbside recycling cart.

♻️ A little reminder: When in doubt, use this helpful online tool from Tri-County Recycling to double check: https://loom.ly/nqnIno8

The Brown County Highway Department will soon begin work on the Grant Street railroad crossing project. While this is a County project, we wanted to make sure City of De Pere residents are aware of the upcoming work and how it may affect traffic in the area.

Brown County will be closing Grant Street between S. Sixth Street and S. Fifth Street from Oct. 12 through Nov. 6. The road is being closed so CN Railroad can fix the railroad crossing on Grant Street from Oct 12 through Oct. 16. Once the railroad work is complete, the County plans to do pavement repairs in this area as well. This work is weather dependent so the closure could be longer if the weather does not allow the street repairs to take place.

During this closure between S. Fifth Street and S. Sixth Street, vehicle access to S. Sixth Street will remain available, and drivers will still be able to make left turns onto Grant Street from S. Sixth Street.

If you’d like more information or a map of the impacted areas, we encourage you to visit Brown County’s “Road Closure” website at this link (and look for the CTH EE Railroad Tracks Upgrade project): https://loom.ly/zNnDaZc

We use a valve turning trailer (or valve maintenance trailer) to safely, quickly, and automatically exercise heavy municipal water valves. Turning underground water valves by hand can cause severe physical strain and joint injury over time, while motorized trailers use high-torque mechanical arms to do the heavy lifting.

Prevent Injury: Eliminate the back-breaking, repetitive physical strain of manual valve turning for utility crews.

Exercise and Rehabilitate Valves: Break away rust, mineral buildup (tuberculation), and sediment by safely cycling valves back and forth, preventing them from seizing up.

Ensure Emergency Access: Clear dirt and debris from valve operating nuts and valve boxes.

Data Logging and GPS Mapping: Record precise valve turns, torque data, operating direction, and GPS coordinates via integrated controllers to update municipal GIS infrastructure maps.

Minimize Water Loss: Ensure water main valves can fully seal shut during emergency repairs or main breaks, reducing unnecessary water loss.
