🔍Fact or Fiction❌ Friday
Claim: “If my child or I had lead poisoning, we'd be showing signs."
This claim is fiction.
Most people that have been exposed to lead don’t seem ill and may not have any immediate or obvious symptoms.
The best way to know if someone has been exposed to lead is to get a blood lead test done. Especially for children between the age of 1 and 5, it’s best to consider a blood lead test if:
â—ľthe home they live in was built prior to 1978.
â—ľthey receive Medicaid services.
â—ľthey are adopted from a separate country, immigrated, or are a refugee. (The CDC advises any refugee child to have a blood lead test once in the U.S. and after they are in their new home.)
â—ľthey reside close to a recognized lead source, like a lead mine or smelter.
Depending upon the blood lead level results, their primary care provider can offer guidance on how to proceed.

MOSQUITO BITE PREVENTION
Know when to expect mosquitoes, what repellents to use, what to wear, and how to limit your exposure.
â—ľIn Illinois, mosquito season lasts from the spring through autumn until the first hard frost.
â—ľMost mosquitoes are active from dusk until dawn.
â—ľUse EPA-registered insect repellents and follow label instructions to apply.
â—ľUse products with 0.5% permethrin to treat clothing & gear.
â—ľWear light-colored, loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and pants and tuck pant legs into your shoes or socks.
â—ľAvoid outdoor activities in the evening or early morning.
â—ľInstall mosquito netting to unenclosed structures.
â—ľDump and prevent any standing water from accumulating.
