The Friends Alliance holds quarterly board meetings of member groups, and other Friends groups are invited to attend. We share ideas that have worked and brainstorm new ideas to help our libraries in this time of extreme budget cuts. We also hold workshops on book sales, duties of officers, fundraising, and increasing membership. Holiday Closings
The Doraville Library will close Thursday, December 31 at 6:00 p.m. and remain closed on January 1 and 2, 2016 in observance of the New Year. All other branches will close Thursday, December 31 at 5:00 p.m. and remain closed on Friday, January 1, 2016.

Doris K. Wells Heritage Festival Continues At Library in January
“One Day in January” is a fascinating exhibit of black and white photographs taken on January 15, 1969 by a college student in Atlanta. The photos chronicle the first ceremony honoring the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., held nine months after his death, and include pictures of Dr. King’s family and important leaders of the Civil Rights Movement.

The exhibit will be on display all during January 2016 at the Stonecrest Library. It is one of a number of compelling programs scheduled for January as the Doris K. Wells Heritage Festival continues into the New Year at DeKalb County Public Library. The Festival celebrates the rich diversity of cultures in DeKalb County and seeks to raise awareness and appreciation for that rich diversity through events featuring art, music, dance, crafts and informational programming. It began in 2014 as an expansion of the Kwanzaa Awareness Festival, begun over 30 years ago by the late Doris Wells, the DeKalb system’s first African-American librarian. The Festival was renamed in her honor this season.

Festival events in January will also include “Embrace Our World” programs at the Decatur Library. The programs in January, aimed at families, will focus specifically on Japanese culture and will include storytelling, book discussions and crafts. Funding for the series is provided by the Decatur Craft Beer Festival grant and the DeKalb Library Foundation.

Visit Local Attractions with Free Park and Museum Passes

DeKalb County Public Library participates in a program made available through Georgia Public Library Service (GPLS) which provides free passes to state parks and other attractions.

Adult patrons with a valid DeKalb County Public Library card may borrow a pass to these attractions at any of our branches and enjoy an educational day of family fun.

Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites

The Georgia ParkPass library loan program is a partnership with GPLS and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Passes check out for 7 days and allow up to 4 visitors to be admitted to state parks and historic sites at no charge. Passes also include free parking and a guide booklet. Go Fish Education Center

The Go Fish Education Center Library Pass program is a partnership with GPLS and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division. Passes check out for 7 days and allow up to 4 visitors to be admitted to the Center at no charge. The Center is located in Perry, Georgia. Beginning May 27, 2015, Go Fish is open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00-5:00 p.m. Go Fish will return to its regular hours after August 9, 2015. Zoo Atlanta

The Zoo Atlanta Family Pass program is a partnership with GPLS and Zoo Atlanta. Patrons must check out, watch and return the Zoo Atlanta DVD to receive a receipt, good for up to 7 days, for free admission for 2 adults and 2 children to Zoo Atlanta. Center for Puppetry Arts

The Center for Puppetry Arts will temporarily suspend its Passport to Puppetry museum pass program on May 24, 2015, while the Center builds a new museum space. The Center for Puppetry Arts remains open during construction, and the museum pass program is scheduled to resume in 2016. For more about the Center, visit puppet.org.
