This week we have been finding restrooms in our parks being vandalized, and we could really use everyone’s help in getting this to stop. Wednesday morning we found the lid to the toilet shattered in REV West women’s bathroom and this morning we found mustard sprayed all over Legion Parks men’s bathroom.

Please take a few minutes to talk with your kids about respecting our parks and everything in them, including the bathrooms. These parks are here for everyone in our community to enjoy, and we want to keep them nice for everyone.

I know sometimes things may seem like little pranks, but the cleanup and repairs take time away from our city workers and require money to fix things that shouldn’t have been damaged in the first place.

If you know anything about what has been happening, please let us know so we can work together to address it.

We appreciate everyone who helps take care of our parks and reminds our kids how important it is to respect our community. ❀️🌳

Edited**
Many people are commenting about cameras, we do have cameras at some of our parks. Vandalism inside a restroom is difficult to catch as cameras are NOT inside restrooms. With them outside, the volume of community members who use our facilities are very high. Which we absolutely LOVE how many people use our facilities! We are currently looking at the cameras but parents need to be informing their children that even though this seems harmless, in reality it is not. The mustard has been cleaned off but has left a yellow stain on the walls and the vinegar base is pealing the paint off now. Every school break, vandalism in park facilities increases. We just want children of the community to have a great time but also respect the facilities they use.

πŸ’š Decatur, WE ARE GETTING CLOSER! Let's make South Ward Park happen! 🌳

We are so thankful for the people and businesses who have already stepped forward to support the South Ward Park project! Every donation, every share, and every conversation about this project helps bring us closer to creating an inclusive place where children of all ages and abilities can play, explore, and make memories together.

A special thank-you to our supporters who have contributed so far:

πŸ’š Larry Isch
πŸ’š Heller Nursery
πŸ’š St. Mary's Fall Fest
πŸ’š Jodi Mack
πŸ’š Jenni Hamilton
πŸ’š Anne Razo
πŸ’š Barbara Engle
πŸ’š Tara Riehm
πŸ’š Julee Wyatt

We are also incredibly grateful to Adams Memorial Hospital for helping make every qualifying donation go even further with its matching commitment!

🌟 Here's where we stand:

🌳 $33,134 raised toward our $50,000 goal!

πŸ’š $3,450 in donations eligible for the Adams Memorial match so far!

πŸŽ‰ When we reach our $50,000 fundraising goal, the IHCDA CreatINg Places grant will provide an additional $50,000 match, bringing $100,000 in matching funds toward South Ward Park!

πŸ“… We have until NOVEMBER 2 to reach our goal and secure the IHCDA match!

We know there are many worthy causes in our community, and we are grateful for every person who has supported this project in any way. If you are able to give, your contribution can help us get closer to the finish line. If giving isn't possible, sharing this post and helping us spread the word is just as appreciated. πŸ’š

This is about more than a playground. It's about giving our children a place to belong, helping families connect, and building a community where every child has the opportunity to play.

We are so thankful for this community. Let's see what we can accomplish together before November 2! πŸŒ³πŸ’š

πŸŒ³β˜€οΈ FACILITY SPOTLIGHT: OUR COMMUNITY PARKS! β˜€οΈπŸŒ³

Our parks are some of the places where community happens! From birthday parties and family get-togethers to playground adventures, picnics, and simply enjoying the outdoors, our parks offer opportunities for everyone to get outside and make memories. πŸ’š

As we continue highlighting the facilities and opportunities offered through Decatur Parks & Recreation, we wanted to start with the places so many of us enjoy: OUR PARKS!

🌳 WHAT OUR PARKS OFFER
πŸ› Playgrounds
🧺 Pavilions for gatherings and celebrations
⚽ Open spaces to play and enjoy the outdoors

Each park has something different to offer, and we'll be highlighting individual parks in upcoming posts!

πŸŽ‰ PAVILION RENTALS β€” NOW $10 PER HOUR!

Previously, pavilion rentals were $20 per day. Our new hourly rate gives families more flexibility and allows more than one group to reserve a pavilion throughout the day!

Here's what to know:
πŸ’² $10 per hour
⏰ 30 minutes before your reservation for setup and 30 minutes afterward for cleanup and tear-down.
🌳 Renting a pavilion does NOT reserve the entire park. The pavilion is reserved for your gathering, but the park remains open to the public.

🚻 WHEN ARE PARK BATHROOMS OPEN?

Bathrooms typically open in mid-April, weather permitting. We need nighttime temperatures to stay above freezing for several days before turning the water on.

In the fall, bathrooms close when freezing nighttime temperatures return. We're currently preparing for winter, and all park water will be shut off by November 1. We'll reopen facilities when spring weather allows.

πŸ’š HELP US PLAN FOR THE FUTURE!

We're working on our City & County Five-Year Master Park Plan, and your input matters! What would you like to see in our parks? More playgrounds, trails, restrooms, or other amenities?

Please complete our community survey so your ideas can be documented and considered!

Thank you for enjoying our parks and helping us keep these spaces welcoming for everyone! Stay tuned as we spotlight more of what Decatur and Adams County have to offer. 🌳

β˜€οΈπŸ’¦ FACILITY SPOTLIGHT: DECATUR CITY POOL πŸ’¦β˜€οΈ

For generations, the Decatur City Pool has been a place to cool off, learn to swim, and make summer memories with family and friends. ❀️

As we continue introducing the facilities that make up our Parks & Recreation Department, we also want to talk about one of our community's most important and talked-about facilities: the Decatur City Pool.

The City Pool has now celebrated 100 years of history! While it has served our community for generations, the facility is showing its age. The pool has ongoing maintenance and repair needs that make it important for us to consider what the future should look like.

Our current facility includes:
πŸ’¦ A shallow entry area with a 1-foot depth
πŸ’¦ A 12-foot diving well
πŸ’¦ A 1-meter diving board
πŸ’¦ Two racing slides in the 5-foot section
πŸ’¦ Two swimming lanes
πŸ’¦ A concession stand
πŸ’¦ A bathhouse

🌊 SO, WHAT COMES NEXT?

We know the future of the pool is a topic people care deeply about. There are many different opinions, memories, and hopes for what this facility could be, and we understand that.

As we look ahead, we need to consider all options to help make a new pool project possible. We have met with different pool companies to learn about options, costs, and what moving forward could look like.

We are exploring possibilities, gathering information, and learning what may be possible including the possibility of a splash pad at this location. No decisions have been made at this time.

πŸ“£ YOUR VOICE MATTERS!

One of the most important pieces of this process is our community survey as we work on the City and County Five-Year Master Park Plan.

Before we can responsibly move forward with a project of this size, we need to hear from the people who use our facilities, the families who hope to use them, and the residents who help fund them through their tax dollars and donations for a project such as this.

What would you like to see in the future of our pool? What features matter most to your family? Are there things you love about the current pool that you want to preserve, or improvements you would like us to consider?

Please take the time to complete the survey and share your thoughts. Facebook comments are welcome, but completing the survey is especially important because it allows your feedback to be formally documented as part of our planning process.

Our job is to listen, research the options, explore funding opportunities, and make informed recommendations for the future of our parks and facilities.

Thank you to everyone who have taken the survey and continue to care about the future of the Decatur City Pool. This facility has been part of our community for nearly a century, and the conversations we have today will help inform what comes next. πŸ’™

A SPOOKTACULAR job by all our Ghouls and Goblins!

Our little monsters conjured up some boo-tiful masterpieces during our Fall Break art project.

A BIG thank you to local artist Ruth Green and her sidekick Grace, for sharing their artistic magic and helping our little goblins create some hauntingly good artwork!

Check out these pics, they are a real treat.
