From the Archives: Record of Statistics: Members, Contributions, etc., 1855–1865

This historic ledger offers a glimpse into church membership and community life in Georgia before and during the Civil War, including records connected to both white and enslaved African American congregants. It reminds us of the importance of preserving voices and stories that might otherwise be overlooked.

Preserving Local Church History

The Local Church History Project began around 1930 through the vision of Mrs. W. T. Fowler of Lexington, Kentucky who was appointed Historian of Woman’s Work for the Presbyterian Church in the United States.

In preparation for the PCUS Diamond Jubilee in 1936, Mrs. Fowler called for the history of every congregation in the denomination to be compiled and preserved. Over the years, many of these histories were written by members of Presbyterian Women, formerly known as the Woman’s Auxiliary or Women of the Church, who served as congregational historians.

Today, this collection helps preserve the memory, ministry, and witness of local Presbyterian congregations across generations.

We invite you to visit the C. Benton Kline, Jr. Special Collections & Archives to explore these materials in person. You can also view the collection online here:

International Archives Week 2026 -
Today, we highlight Thornton Whaling, who became the first President of Columbia Theological Seminary in 1911 after the Seminary recognised the need for stronger executive leadership.

Through archival records, photographs, and historical timelines, we remember the leaders and turning points that shaped Columbia’s journey.

Happy Preservation Week!

At C. Benton Kline, Jr. Special Collections and Archives, we are committed to preserving theological memories, sacred stories, and institutional history for future generations.

This year’s theme, “Is This Thing On?: Preserving Memory and Building Archives,” reminds us that archives keep memory alive.

Preservation Week: April 26–May 2, 2026

Archives are more than storehouses of old materials; they are sacred spaces where memory is preserved, voices are recovered, and forgotten stories are brought back to life.

The recent Morgan Fellowship research of our associates, Ayodele John Alonge and Jaykwon Hosey, is a powerful reminder that archives do more than preserve old records. They safeguard human journeys, faith, culture, and stories that time could easily have erased.

Every manuscript, book, inscription, and document has a voice. The question is whether we will take the time to listen.
