Permanency doesn't look the same for every child. For some, it means reunification with family. For others, it's guardianship, placement with relatives or fictive kin, or adoption. Whatever the outcome, DeKalb County CASA's role is to keep a child's needs and best interests at the center of the case as it moves forward.

Our work is rooted in the community we serve. DeKalb County CASA is based within the juvenile courthouse in Decatur, working alongside caregivers, relatives, service providers, attorneys, and court personnel to support kids across DeKalb County. Every one of those people plays a part in a child's case, and our volunteer advocates help keep the child's needs and voice at the center of it all.

🍎📚 Happy World Teachers' Day! 📚🍎

Today, we celebrate the educators who inspire, encourage, and empower children every day. Teachers do so much more than teach academic subjects. They provide stability, support, mentorship, and encouragement, often serving as trusted adults during some of life's most challenging moments.

At DeKalb County CASA, we are grateful for the teachers, school counselors, administrators, and education professionals who partner with us to support children experiencing foster care. A CASA volunteer is more than a courtroom presence. Volunteers gather information about a child's case, meet with everyone involved, and speak up for that child's best interests in court. We also monitor whether the services a child needs are being provided, and we stay with the case until it reaches an appropriate conclusion.

A common question we hear is whether volunteers need a legal background, and the answer is no. DeKalb County CASA trains and supports every volunteer advocate, so no prior legal experience is required.
