A great day honoring and supporting our local veterans! Sheriff Patrick McDermott, the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office, and the Town of Avon, MA Veterans Service Office hosted a successful veterans-focused “House to House for Heroes” outreach in Avon on Saturday
The community-driven initiative allowed volunteers to meet the men and women who have given so much to their country through their honorable military service. It also provided volunteers an opportunity to deliver essential information about the benefits, services, and resources available to veterans, and to thank them for their service.
The event began with a kickoff ceremony at Frank M. Noyes VFW Post 8892, Avon MA, on East Main Street in Avon, where Sheriff McDermott recognized the day's honorary veteran chairperson, Tim Plaisted. Mr. Plaisted is a United States Army veteran and a Purple Heart recipient who served in Iraq during Operation Enduring Freedom.
House to House for Heroes is meant to honor all who have served, like Mr. Plaisted. After the kickoff ceremony, volunteers were assigned homes to conduct their door-to-door outreach to more than 150 veterans in Avon.
"Mr. Plaisted is also an advocate for veterans to apply for and accept any support and benefits they qualify for, after their military service," said Sheriff McDermott. "That is at the heart of the House to House for Heroes veteran outreach, and I am thankful for Mr. Plaisted's service, and for the volunteers who took part in this door-to-door effort."
Avon was the tenth Norfolk County community visited through this veterans' outreach program. Previous House to House for Heroes outreach events have been hosted by the sheriff's office in Holbrook, Canton, Foxborough, Stoughton, Walpole, Norfolk, Weymouth, Braintree, and Quincy.
