🚨 STOP. THINK. VERIFY. — A MESSAGE FROM YOUR POLICE DEPARTMENT 🚨
We need to talk, and we need you to listen.
We have seen a SHARP INCREASE in scam calls, texts, and online messages targeting our community — and people are losing real money. Not "someone else." Your neighbors. Your parents. Your grandparents. People right here.
Here's the truth, plain and simple:
❌ NOBODY legitimate will ever ask you to pay them in gift cards. Not the IRS. Not the police. Not the power company. Not Amazon. NOBODY.
❌ NOBODY legitimate needs you to wire money, send cryptocurrency, or mail cash to "fix" an emergency, unlock a prize, or avoid arrest.
❌ If someone online who you've never met in person is asking you for money — for ANY reason — it is a scam. A romance. A "business opportunity." A "family member" in trouble. A "friend" stuck overseas. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW REAL IT FEELS.
And here's the part we need you to really hear: EVEN IF YOU DON'T THINK YOU'RE BEING SCAMMED — STOP AND CALL US FIRST. Scammers are professionals. They know what to say. They know how to make it feel urgent, personal, and real. Feeling certain is not the same as being right.
IF SOMEONE IS PRESSURING YOU TO ACT RIGHT NOW — THAT IS THE SCAM. Real emergencies do not require gift cards. Real relationships do not require secrecy from your family.
🛑 HANG UP.
🛑 DO NOT SEND MONEY.
🛑 DO NOT SHARE GIFT CARD NUMBERS.
🛑 CALL US OR A FAMILY MEMBER BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING.
Please — check on your parents. Check on your grandparents. Check on your neighbors. Talk to them about this today. Scammers are counting on people staying quiet out of embarrassment. Don't let them.
SHARE THIS. REPOST THIS. SEND IT TO SOMEONE YOU LOVE.
If you or someone you know may be a victim of a scam, contact us immediately. It is never too late to report it, and you will not be judged.
Stay alert. Look out for each other.

Official Statement from the Deer Lodge Police Department

We are aware of a recent article published by the Silver State Post regarding an investigation into an allegation of child abuse involving a staff member at Powell County High School. We would like to provide our community with accurate context regarding this report.

The Source of the Report: Child Protective Services (CPS) received a report concerning a school staff member. We want to clarify that this allegation did not come from a victim, a parent, or a direct witness. Instead, it was reported by a third- or fourth-party individual who is completely removed from the alleged incident.

Current Status: Standard protocol requires CPS to cross-reference all reports with local law enforcement. Because the alleged incident falls within our jurisdiction, the Deer Lodge Police Department is currently looking into the matter.

We also want to clear up some recent published confusion regarding the roles of local law enforcement agencies:

The Deer Lodge Police Department has not taken over child abuse cases from the Powell County Sheriff’s Office.

Deer Lodge PD investigates cases that occur strictly within the city limits of Deer Lodge.

The Powell County Sheriff’s Office handles cases that occur outside the city limits but within Powell County. While the Sheriff's Office holds county-wide jurisdiction (meaning they can investigate cases anywhere in the county, including inside city limits), our agencies generally divide cases based on those city lines.

Our department remains fully committed to the safety of our community's youth and ensuring all reports are thoroughly evaluated. Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
