Calling All CERT Members!
As CERT members, we train to recognize hazards, provide situational awareness and help our communities before, during and after disasters. SKYWARN® Storm Spotter training is a natural extension of that mission.

Severe weather can develop quickly, and while the National Weather Service has sophisticated radar, satellites and other technology, there is something technology cannot always provide — trained eyes on the ground.
That’s where SKYWARN® volunteers come in.
The National Weather Service established SKYWARN® to train volunteers to recognize and accurately report potentially dangerous weather conditions. Today, hundreds of thousands of trained SKYWARN® spotters across the country provide critical information that helps meteorologists issue and update warnings for severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and flash floods.
Why SKYWARN® Is Valuable for CERT
CERT members are already trained to observe, assess and report conditions in their communities. SKYWARN® training builds on those skills by teaching you what to look for when severe weather threatens and, just as importantly, what information the National Weather Service needs you to report.
During this FREE two-hour virtual class, you'll learn:
Basics of thunderstorm development
Fundamentals of storm structure
How to identify potential severe weather
What weather conditions should be reported
How to make an effective storm report
Basic severe weather safety
You don't have to be a meteorologist. The training will teach you how to recognize the weather features that matter.
During a disaster, CERT members may be positioned throughout their communities when severe weather occurs. A timely, accurate report from a trained spotter can help the National Weather Service understand what is actually happening on the ground and provide valuable minutes for others to take protective action.
CERT teaches us to be prepared to help when our communities need us. SKYWARN® gives us one more valuable skill to add to our toolbox.
