Army ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) is one of the best leadership courses in the country and can be a part of your college curriculum. Being a student at Northern Illinois University and learning to become a leader will make your college experience even richer-and prepare you for the future. The Northern Illinois University Huskie ROTC Battalion has been providing quality leadership to the US Army (including the Illinois Army National Guard) for over forty years. We take pride in the success of our past and present Cadets, and are sure that our Cadets of the future will continue to uphold the high standards which have been established. NIU will continue to develop the leaders of tomorrow and the future remains bright for the Battalion and our Cadets.

A look back at our AFT evaluation from earlier this month. Cadets brought high intensity to every lane, logging heavy reps on the hex bar, grinding through the sprint-drag-carry, and finishing strong on the two-mile course to establish our fall baseline.

Five events in the books:
• 3-Rep Maximum Deadlift (MDL)
• Hand-Release Push-Ups (HRP)
• Sprint-Drag-Carry (SDC)
• Plank (PLK)
• 2-Mile Run (2MR)

Baselines are set, data is logged, and the training cycle keeps moving forward. Keep up the great work Huskies!

Solid first FTX as a full company with the Rolling Thunder Battalion. Bringing together NIU, Wheaton, and Olivet. Knocked out drill and ceremony, crushed the o-course, and somehow managed to find our points in the day and dark for night land nav (after a lot of red-lens flashlight checking).🥾🧭

Nothing like gym weights for center PT to start the session, ending with the classic ab gauntlet. If your core isn’t shaking by the flutter kicks, did you even PT?

“I’m up, he sees me, I’m down.” ⏱️🪖

From individual movement drills to bounding overwatch and reacting to contact, Huskie Company put in the tactical work out in Stevenson Woods for Lab 2. Senior cadets broke down the doctrine, MS3s sharpened their leadership, and underclassmen got down in the dirt to build squad-level muscle memory.

Hands-on from day one. For our first lab of the semester, Cadets tackled multiple training stations—including EST marksmanship fundamentals, Color Guard procedures, and crossing the river on the one-rope bridge. The Battalion also spent time with Mission to highlight mission support operations.

Shoutout to all the students who stopped by our recruitment tent to learn more about ROTC and took on the rope bridge challenge across campus!

On May 23rd, Cadet Popciak proudly volunteered with NIU ROTC to assist Lane Tech JROTC during the Memorial Day Parade in downtown Chicago, honoring the service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for our nation. As a former member of the program, Cadet Popciak had the opportunity to mentor and speak with JROTC cadets about the transition to Senior ROTC, college life, and the opportunities that come with becoming future Army leaders. It was a meaningful opportunity to give back, reconnect with the program, and continue fostering leadership and mentorship within the ROTC community.
