When was the last time you checked your fire extinguishers?

Fire extinguishes have an estimated shelf-life of 10-12 years. If you can't remember when you last purchased a fire extinguisher, it's time to expect the expiration date on all the fire extinguishers in your home.

It is also important to keep one fire extinguisher on every level of your home. Additionally, there should always be a fire extinguisher in your kitchen AND in your garage.

Fire extinguishers are labeled by the class of fire they can extinguish. Take care to ensure you have the proper type of extinguisher in each area of your home. If you have questions, reach out to your local fire department.

This message has been brought to you by DeKalb Township as part of Fire Prevention Month.

Need to dispose of an expired fire extinguisher? Follow these instructions courtesy of DeKalb County Solid Waste:

"Fire extinguishers are under pressure and have the potential to explode in combination with some materials. They cannot be discarded curbside, to recycle contact the product manufacturers to see if there is a recycling program in place or if they can be returned to the manufacturer. If they cannot be returned or recycled and are still filled, they should be brought to a long-term household hazardous waste facility. See “Hazardous Waste.” If they are empty, they can be taken to a metal scrapper, like Zimmermans or DIMCO. Call ahead."

If you live within the DeKalb city limits, you may contact Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS) by calling (815) 770-7500 to schedule a Household Hazardous Waste home collection.

To empty an expired fire extinguisher, take it outside to a well-ventilated area, away from people and lets. Place the nozzle inside a heavy-duty trash bag, and squeeze the handle until all pressure and contents are fully released. Leave the empty extinguisher outside for 24 to 48 hours to ensure all lingering pressure has completely leaked out. Try squeezing the handle again afterward to confirm no air or gas remains. Unscrew or detach the valve head from the metal cylinder body so sanitation workers or scrap yards know it is safe.

📄 Have a Lease? Don't Skip on Renter's Insurance!

🏠 Renter's Insurance is an affordable tool that provides tenants with financial assistance after a qualifying loss. Renter's Insurance covers damage caused by fire, smoke, tornado (wind), theft and more. 🌪️🔥

💵 When a covered loss occurs, the insurance company will pay out (up to the policy's limits) for damage to (or theft of) your personal property. Personal property includes items such as furniture, clothing, electronics, food, books, and more. This coverage helps tenants to get back on their feet again by providing compensation that aids with replacing items lost during the covered event.

💰 BUT, Renter's Insurance does much more than just cover stuff. It also provides protection known as Loss of Use or Additional Living Expenses. This portion of the policy will pay (up to policy limits) to assist a displaced tenant with the additional expenses they incur as a result of a claim. This includes: temporary hotel stays, the increased cost of rent or utilities at a new apartment, compensation for increased travel expenses due to a lengthier commute following a relocation, reimbursement for meals during the displacement, and more. 🏢 🍽️ 🚗💨 📈

⚕️ The benefits of Renter's Insurance don't stop there. Policies also include Medical Expense Coverage and Personal Liability Protection. ⚖️

🚨 During Fire Prevention Month, DeKalb Township would like to remind our tenant residents that not all fires are preventable, which is why it is SO important to be prepared for the unexpected-- Renter's Insurance can go a long way in providing stability after the devastation of a fire, tornado, or other covered event.

🚫 Don't be a victim twice. Secure your renter's insurance for your own well-being and peace of mind. 😌

DeKalb Township's Committee on Youth was recognized for its contributions to the DeKalb community. Members of the DeKalb Township's Committee on Youth have participated in the Fun Jam in the Park series for the past several years.

Fun Jam in the Park is organized by the DeKalb Police Department in partnership with Opportunity DeKalb, Building Leaders Advocating for Change NFP, the Breakroom and Friends, and the DeKalb Park District.

Our Committee on Youth is passionate about connecting with local youth through this event, and is honored to have received recognition from the DeKalb Police Department for their involvement.

Today, we held our 5th Annual Citizens' Appreciation ceremony, where residents were recognized for their participation in providing aid and assistance not only to the Police Department but also to their fellow neighbors and citizens. Partnership within the community makes DeKalb a better and safer place to live! We are thankful for everyone who provides assistance to others, realizing it would be impossible to recognize everyone who lends a helping hand at a critical time!
