Del City NJROTC The Del City High School NJROTC is a program that focuses on teaching cadets to become better follow Womack, Jr. took his place.

Del City High School’s NJROTC Unit, called Eagle Navy, came into existence in the Fall of 1994 under the command of Commander Brian O’Callahan and Chief Daniel Merrill. The following year, Commander O’Callahan moved to Texas and Senior Naval Science Instructor, Captain Lee T. In 2020 the NJROTC spaces were designated as the “Captain Womack- Chief Merrill leadership training center of excellence.”

Throughout the years, cadets of Eagle Navy, have entered every branch of the military, and many are still proudly serving their country around the world. Many have gone on to complete their college degrees and many entered the work force and have been quite successful,

NJROTC is a multi-disciplinary curriculum encompassing leadership, citizenship, health, study skills, current events, military drill, physical fitness and fun. In addition to the academics, students are given opportunities to assume various responsibilities within the unit as squad or platoon leaders, team commanders, and staff positions. The Unit hosts the following teams; a Color (Honor) Guard, Armed Regulation, Unarmed Regulation, Exhibition , Service, Marksmanship, Athletic and Academic teams. The academic teams have consistently been ranked in the top fifty of the nation, competing against over 3000 NJROTC teams world-wide. The Color Guards have appeared around the state at numerous civic and military functions and are in constant demand. The Eagle Navy provides Color Guard for every home sporting event always promoting patriotism. In spite of its hectic academic and team schedule, the cadets have always found the time to perform a myriad of community service functions and fund raisers and was awarded the Volunteer Organization of the Year award by the American Red Cross in 2012, the Distinguished Unit award, and Unit Achievement awards by the Navy. The cadets have raised thousands of dollars for the Special Olympics, provided holiday meals to the less fortunate, decorated the elderly homes for Christmas and provided monetary and physical assistance to disaster (tornado/flooding) victims throughout the years. In recent years the Eagle Navy was responsible for the rededication of the Robert F Kalsu Memorial Football Stadium. The Cadets annually “run
The Game day” football from DCHS to Rose Field for the rivalry MWC- DC football game. Additionally the Eagle Navy celebrates April as leadership training month instituting “leadership luncheon huddles “ bring in guest speakers. The Unit continues to grow and with the continued outstanding support of the Mid-Del/DCHS administration, staff, and teachers, the DCHS NJROTC will have a long life in Del City.

🇺🇲Another busy day with your Eagle Navy! 🦅⚓

Your Eagle Cadets had the honor of presenting the Colors at the Military Spouse Appreciation Dinner at Embassy Suites in Norman. It was a privilege to support an event recognizing and celebrating the sacrifices and contributions of our military spouses.

The detail also had the exciting opportunity to meet the National Champion OU Women’s Gymnastics Team! 🏆🤸‍♀️

Proud of our Cadets for representing Eagle Navy and Mid-Del with professionalism, pride, and excellence!

🇺🇸 ASVAB Test Day in Eagle Country 🦅

Today, 21 Eagles took an important step toward their future by participating in ASVAB testing right here at Del City High School!

This year, the Military Entrance Testing Center approved school administrators, counselors, and JROTC instructors to administer and proctor the exam at school sites, making this valuable opportunity more accessible to our students.

A huge thank-you to our Army National Guard and Army Active Duty/Reserve recruiters for their support, and to our superstar librarian for helping make testing day a success! We appreciate everyone who helped our students take this next step toward their future goals.
Whether their paths lead to military service, college, or civilian careers, we're proud to see our Eagles preparing for what comes next!

⚓ EAGLE NAVY CELEBRATES 251 YEARS OF NAVAL HERITAGE 🇺🇸

Today, Eagle Navy partnered with the MWC Midwest City Veterans Memorial to celebrate the U.S. Navy’s 251st birthday and honor the service members affected by the bombing of the USS Cole, marking the 26th anniversary of this tragic attack.
Our cadets proudly represented Del City High School NJROTC during the ceremony:

⚓ Cadet Plunkett delivered the Navy birthday message.
🇺🇸 Cadet Smith raised the Navy flag and USS Cole pennant.
🫡 Cadet Odell served as the Commander of the Detail.

We were also especially honored to welcome back our former Senior Naval Science Instructor, Captain John “Irish” Keilty. John Keilty poured his heart and soul into building and leading our unit, leaving a lasting impact on generations of cadets. He continues his commitment to service through his involvement with various veterans’ organizations throughout the Oklahoma City area.

Our Navy Eagles showed up in numbers for today's "Big Event" community service project. The Unit's responsibility was picking up trash and debris on Sunnylane Rd.

JROTC is not just a "school calendar year" commitment for many of our Cadets. They are continously looking for opportunities year round, to better themselves, their school and their community.

Today we had the honor and privilege of hosting Rear Admiral Pottenburgh, Commander Navy Service Training Command, to Eagle country. Our Cadet Leadership gave briefs on events and activities our Unit is involved in, and the Admiral spoke with the group on NJROTC initiatives and opportunities.

We were also joined by Representative Andy Fugate, District PAO, Mid-Del Executive Director of Secondary Instruction, and our local Kiwanis President and representative Wendell Kluge who presented the Unit with a plaque of appreciation and considerable donation.

Eagle Navy is very aware of how fortunate we are to have the full and unwavering support of our School Administration Steve Gilliland as we continously try to increase the standard. Its days like these that reminds us of the good deeds and impact our Cadets are making in service of our community!

Eagle Navy has received the heartbreaking news that Chief Dan Merrill has passed away.

Chief Merrill was one of the founding instructors of Del City High School NJROTC, where he dedicated 25 years to leading and shaping this unit. Throughout his time at DCHS, he made a lasting impact on generations of Cadets, instructors, and families.

Chief Merrill was deeply loved and respected by his peers and students. His leadership, dedication, mentorship, and commitment to the young men and women of Eagle Navy will not be forgotten.

His influence extends far beyond the years he served at the helm of this unit. The lessons he taught, the lives he touched, and the legacy he helped build will continue through every generation of Eagle Navy that follows.

Fair winds and following seas, Chief Merrill.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Chief Merrill’s family, friends, former students, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle.
Rest in peace, Chief.
