Horror movies are part of history. Classics like The Exorcist and Halloween have been landmarks of our culture for decades, shaping Octobers across the world every year. But when Halloweentime comes around and I go digging for my next spooktacular movie night, I don’t just rely on classics. I like to hunt for the strange, obscure, and forgotten. One of my absolute favorites in that category is an oddball film made entirely in Pueblo, Colorado: Curse of the Blue Lights.

This schlocky 1980s feature tells the story of ghouls infiltrating a Colorado town to perform a dark ritual and resurrect the fearsome Muldoon Man (yes, that “Muldoon Man”). It was made on a shoestring budget by ambitious Colorado filmmakers known for history documentaries, and it shows in the cheap props, but also in the soul that shines through every cheesy effect and hammy performance. Combined with many recognizable locations and local references, these traits made this mostly-forgotten film a cult favorite in Pueblo.

Even if you aren’t from Pueblo, I recommend giving this weird little movie a try, especially if you’re like me and enjoy the cheesiest scares of the ’80s, or just want to see a strange piece of southern Colorado cultural history. And besides, it ends with a bang. Literally—dynamite gets involved.
