Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest for DWI—Third or More Offense and Resisting Arrest

On October 18, 2026, at approximately 1:03 a.m., a Del Rio Police Department officer conducted a traffic stop in the 2000 block of Veterans Boulevard.

Upon contacting the driver, the officer noticed a strong odor of mint on his breath, bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech. Based on these observations, the officer requested that the driver participate in Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.

The driver initially agreed and exited the vehicle. However, after the officer demonstrated the tests, the driver became upset and refused to complete them. Based on the observed signs of intoxication, the officer placed him under arrest for Driving While Intoxicated.

During the arrest, the driver pulled away and physically resisted. The officer gained control of him and secured him in custody.

The driver, identified as Miguel Junior Maldonado, 39, was transported to the police station for processing. A subsequent records check revealed previous DWI convictions. Officers obtained a search warrant, and a blood specimen was collected.

Maldonado was charged with Driving While Intoxicated—Third or More Offense and Resisting Arrest, Search, or Transportation. He was transferred to the custody of the GEO Correctional Facility pending magistration.

All individuals are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Welfare Check Leads to Federal Custody of Seven Individuals

On October 14, 2026, at approximately 9:07 p.m., Del Rio Police Department officers responded to a hotel in the 2100 block of Veterans Boulevard after a concerned individual reported that several people might be held against their will inside a room.

Officers contacted the occupants of the identified room and conducted a welfare check. All appeared unharmed, and none reported being held against their will or requested police assistance. Officers cleared the scene and forwarded the information to the incoming morning shift for follow-up.

On the morning of October 15, officers contacted the reporting party, who provided additional details that warranted further investigation. Del Rio Police Department officers, working with the Texas Department of Public Safety, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), returned to conduct a second welfare check.

Authorities located one adult male and two adult females in the initially identified room. Information developed during the investigation led authorities to a second room, where four adult males were located.

All seven individuals were confirmed to be unharmed and were subsequently taken into custody by federal authorities in connection with alleged immigration-related violations.

CHILDREN LEFT UNATTENDED; TODDLER FOUND INJURED

On October 11, 2026, at approximately 3:25 p.m., Del Rio Police Department officers responded to Gateway Apartments, located at 200 Space Blvd., regarding three children who had been left unattended.

Officers met with the children’s custodial parent, who reported receiving a phone call while at work from a male caregiver who was watching her children. During the call, she heard one of the children crying in the background. When she asked what was wrong, an argument ensued.

The parent left work and returned home, where she discovered that her three children, ranging in age from 2 to 8, had been left alone.

The older children reported that the caregiver had assaulted the 2-year-old. Officers observed a visible injury to the toddler’s head consistent with the children’s accounts. Emergency Medical Services responded to evaluate the child, who was subsequently transported to Val Verde Regional Medical Center for further treatment.

The suspect, identified as Andrew De Leon, 26, was arrested and charged with Abandoning or Endangering a Child with Intent to Return and Injury to a Child/Elderly/Disabled Individual.

De Leon was transported to the Del Rio Police Department for processing and later transferred to the GEO Correctional Facility pending magistration.

All persons accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
