Fire Prevention Week is over, but Fire Prevention Month is far from done!

DeLand firefighters visited the students at the Little House Next Door and gave them an up-close look at what a firefighter really looks like geared up, along with the tools that help stop a fire before it starts.

Earlier this week, we introduced you to our three newest firefighters: Nadiri Seals, Ian Baker, and Jahir Laboy-Toro.

Their welcome to the department continued with a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb alongside the crew, honoring the 343 firefighters who gave their lives on September 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center towers.

The climb represents the 110 stories those firefighters faced that day, a tradition that reminds us of the courage and sacrifice that define this profession.

The DeLand Fire Department hosted and took part in rope rescue training, with crews rappelling and working on rope systems at Fire Station 81.

Fire departments train on ropes because emergencies don’t always happen at ground level. These skills let firefighters reach people in trench collapses, high-angle situations, confined spaces, and other places a ladder can’t get to.

Rope rescue also depends on clear communication and trust between the firefighters on the line and the ones running the system, and like any perishable skill, the more often we train, the better we perform when someone is counting on us.

The DeLand Fire Department is proud to welcome three new members to the family, Nadiri Seals, Ian Baker, and Jahir Laboy-Toro.

To kick things off, the newest members joined Chief Allen for a morning run around DeLand, getting to know the crew and the community they’ll serve every day.

As National Fire Prevention Week wraps up, Tower 83 had a special visit today at Lil Lambs Christian Preschool at City Sanctuary Church!

We showed the students how firefighters gear up so that if they ever see us in full gear, they’ll know we’re friendly helpers and there’s nothing to be afraid of.

When people think of the fire department, they picture trucks and flames, but the best fire is the one that never starts. A well-planned and well-executed fire prevention and inspection program is one of the most effective ways to keep fires from happening at all.

As we wrap up National Fire Prevention Week, we're proud to spotlight the DeLand Fire Department's Fire Prevention Division.

Fire safety inspections and public education are among the most important non-firefighting services our department provides, and this team leads the way.

Their work also includes new construction plan reviews and permit inspections, fire protection system permitting and inspections, special event and food truck inspections, and fire investigations.

Thank you to the men and women of our Fire Prevention Division for the work they do behind the scenes every day to keep DeLand residents, visitors, and businesses safe.

Yesterday, the DeLand Fire Department gathered to honor Battalion Chief Robert “Brad” Cory on his retirement after 21 years of dedicated service to the City of DeLand and our community.

Chief Cory began his career with DFD on August 20, 2005, as a firefighter. He rose through the ranks from firefighter to engineer, lieutenant, and ultimately battalion chief, where he served as a respected shift commander. Along the way, he earned a master’s degree and a multitude of certifications, and he was passionate about training and mentoring the firefighters on his shift.

Brad was also a member of the DeLand Fire Department Honor Guard, representing our department and city at events throughout DeLand and Volusia County with professionalism and pride. His legacy lives on in the firefighters he trained, the crews he prepared, and the countless citizens who were better served because he showed up and did his job.

Chief Cory, thank you for the long shifts, the difficult calls, the training, and the sacrifices. Thank you for your leadership, your friendship, and your commitment to this department and the people we serve. You have earned this next chapter.

It's day four of National Fire Prevention Week, and this year's theme is "Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower."

Lithium-ion batteries power so much of our daily lives, from cell phones and laptops to e-bikes, and electric vehicles. Used and charged properly, they're safe and reliable. Used carelessly, they can become a serious fire hazard.

Due to predicted inclement weather, tomorrow's National Night Out event at Earl Brown Park is canceled and will be rescheduled for a later date. Your safety is our top priority, and we don't want anyone caught in the expected storms.

We're so grateful for all the excitement and support this event has received from our community and we can't wait to bring everyone together once the skies clear.

We'll announce a new date as soon as it's confirmed.
