What a wonderful time we had hosting kindergarten classes from the school district during Fire Prevention Week! It was a true pleasure to welcome so many eager young learners to the City of Delavan Fire Department.

The kids had a blast exploring our inflatable fire education house, learning essential safety rules, and practicing important skills like "Stop, Drop, and Roll" and how to call 9-1-1. We know they'll remember seeing Sparky the Fire Pup and the excitement of spraying water from a real firehose!

It was also a great opportunity for them to see a firefighter put on their full gear, helping them understand what we wear to stay safe when helping others. A big thank you to all the schools, teachers, and of course, the students, for making this Fire Prevention Week so memorable!

What a fantastic start to Fire Prevention Week! We kicked it off with our open house on Saturday. We featured a touch-a-truck, a dress-as-a-firefighter station, a smoke tower, a fire education house, a food truck, a kitchen fire safety demonstration, and a coloring contest. Fun was had by all who came and we look forward to our open house in 2027!

A huge thank you goes out to My Pizza De Pie for the delicious pizza they provided for our event, Troy Center Fire Department for letting us use their kitchen fire prop, Aurora Lakeland Medical Center for bringing their SIM mannequin, and Mercyhealth Prehospital Services and REACT for bringing their helicopter. You all were a contributing factor to the success of our event!

Last night, our department had the awesome opportunity to train alongside Mercyhealth Prehospital Services and REACT . When it comes to critical emergencies, seamless teamwork between ground crews and air medical teams is everything.

During the joint training, our firefighters got hands-on experience with establishing and securing a safe landing zone, communicating with the flight crew during final approach, and guiding and successfully landing the aircraft.

To wrap it all up, the crew gave us an in-depth tour of the helicopter and its advanced medical capabilities. A huge thank you to the REACT crew for flying in and sharing their expertise with us. We’re always working to keep our skills sharp for our community!

The temperatures are spiking, and an Extreme Heat Warning has been issued for our area. When the combination of high heat and humidity hits, it can quickly become dangerous.

Heat-related illnesses are entirely preventable if you know what to look for and how to protect yourself. Use the quick guide below to keep yourself, your family, and your neighbors safe.

How to Stay Safe:

*Hydrate Constantly: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Avoid sugary, caffeinated, or alcoholic beverages, which can dehydrate you faster.

*Seek A/C: Stay in air-conditioned buildings as much as possible. If your home doesn't have A/C, head to a public library or a shopping center.

*Dress for the Weather: Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing to help your body cool itself properly.

*Limit Outdoor Time: Shift strenuous activities, outdoor work, or exercise to the early morning or late evening hours when temperatures are at their lowest.

Check on those most at risk:

Keep a close eye on infants and young children, older adults, outdoor workers, and those with medical conditions. Never leave children or pets in a parked car. Even with the windows cracked, internal temperatures can reach lethal levels in minutes.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and look out for one another!
