The powerful word we are learning this week is support. Support means to back up the information; prove; provide evidence
⭐ Support = Back It Up + Prove It + Give Evidence
When you support an answer, opinion, or claim, you don't just say what you think. You give facts, details, examples, or evidence to help prove why your answer makes sense.
🌟 Real-Life Examples
1. Support your opinion about your favorite book
You say, “This is the best book because the characters are interesting and the story has an exciting ending.”
You are supporting your opinion because you are giving reasons to explain why you think the book is good.
2. Support your answer in math
Your teacher asks, “How do you know 24 is the answer?”
You say, “I multiplied 6 × 4, and 6 groups of 4 equal 24.”
You are supporting your answer because you are showing the steps and explaining how you know it is correct.
3. Support your claim about the weather
You say, “I think it is going to rain.”
Someone asks, “What makes you think that?”
You answer, “The clouds are dark, the wind is picking up, and I hear thunder.”
You are supporting your claim by giving evidence you observed.
4. Support your answer when reading a story
Your teacher asks, “How do you know the character is scared?”
You answer, “The story says she was shaking, hiding behind the door, and whispering that she heard a noise.”
You are supporting your answer by using evidence from the text.
🧠 Easy Way to Remember
SUPPORT = SAY IT + BACK IT UP + SHOW THE EVIDENCE.
Ask yourself:
💭 What is my answer or opinion?
🤔 Why do I think this?
🔎 What facts, details, or examples can I use?
📖 What evidence proves my answer makes sense?
📚 Support in Reading and Writing
When answering a question about a story, students should learn to support their answers with text evidence.
Question: Why do you think the boy was a good friend?
Weak answer: “Because he was nice.”
Strong answer: “The boy was a good friend because he helped his friend pick up the books that fell on the floor and stayed with him when he was upset.”
The strong answer supports the claim with specific evidence from the story.
