REASON #5 - Familiarize yourself with Changing Election Laws

Since the last presidential election, state legislatures across the country have been hard at work updating election laws.

Voting in state and local elections in 2026 means you’ll be prepared to tackle any changes to voter ID laws, polling hours, or eligibility requirements.

REASON #4 - You Could Be the Deciding Vote

There are local elections across the country that have been decided by a handful of votes--your vote could be a deciding factor in who represents you and your community.

Ballots for the June Primary are now hitting mailboxes. Don’t wait to return yours! US Postal Service recently clarified that a postmark is based on when mail is processed; not when it’s dropped off. In New York, a ballot must be postmarked by Election Day in order to count. Watch this video to ensure your ballot is returned in a timely manner.

REASON #2 – State and Local Decisions Affect Your Day-to-Day Life a Lot
Some of the most significant policy changes in history originated at the local level before evolving into national movements. Issues such as education reform, environmental initiatives, and public health policies often originate in cities and states before evolving into larger-scale actions. By participating in local elections, you help set the stage for the changes you want to see.

You might be asking yourself, “What’s the point of voting in 2026?” since there is no presidential election.

MIDTERM, STATE AND LOCAL ELECTIONS!

In our American democracy, there are NO OFF YEARS. Every year brings new opportunities for us to share our voices and make decisions about the future we want to create. Over the next several days, we will be sharing the top 6 reasons to tune in, get involved, and cast your ballot in 2026.

REASON #1: CRITICAL MIDTERMS, STATE AND LOCAL ELECTIONS
While presidential elections capture the national attention, midterms, local and state elections decide who manages your roads, schools, housing, and public safety.

Midterm elections determine congressional representation, state elections determine assembly and senate representatives, governor, and other state positions. Local elections have a direct impact on our communities—from school policies to infrastructure improvements and essential services—and voters must make their voices heard on these issues.
