Delaware County Department of Public Works’ WEIGHTS & MEASURES Department, directed by Brian Dengler, ensures the price and weight accuracy of all scales, weighing devices, gas pumps and packaged goods in our county. The director keeps the service fully operational with consumer and marketplace protection in mind. Ted Guinn, seen in this video, was our interim director prior to 2019.

Weights and Measures is a one-person department which covers all of Delaware County. This is a consumer-protection position, with the director taking care to ensure that all weighing and measuring devices are accurate to within very small, specific parameters. This ensures that consumers get what they pay for at the pump, store, farmer's market, or other retail location.

Securing your load also reduces roadside litter, especially if you're on your way to the Solid Waste Management Center.

Saturday is National Secure Your Load Day! 🛻📦

Whatever you're hauling this summer, there's a proper way to secure your cargo to keep everyone on the road safe. Road debris from unsecured loads causes thousands of preventable highway crashes every year.

Here's how to do it properly. ⤵️

The Solid Waste Management Center (SWMC) in Walton opened as a municipal solid waste landfill in 1977. We’ve come a long way in materials management since then using innovative equipment and careful planning to ensure the longevity of our site. In this video, take a tour of the SWMC with some close-up looks at the equipment used to process the tons of materials that enter the facility each day. Go behind the scenes with DelCo DPW Solid Waste Director Tyson Robb and Site Manager Andrew Tompkins and get a glimpse of where your unwanted items are headed after you drop them off for processing.

♻️ALUMINUM: REDUCE > REUSE > RECYCLE
Examples: Aluminum foil, drink cans, aluminum single use or reusable pans

🟩REDUCE:
Switch to reusable containers where appropriate, such as reusable drink bottles and food containers.

🟩REUSE:
Aluminum trays can be reused around the home, garage, or farm for organization, feed containers for animals, for craft projects, starting seeds, or in the garden. Before you toss, think about how you can give that item a second life.

♻️RECYCLE:
Aluminum is highly recyclable. Make sure to rinse out containers and don’t recycle anything that is covered in grease or oil. Relatively clean aluminum foil can be recycled – BALL UP FIRST. Recycle loose metal lids if they are 3” or larger, or, if you have smaller metal lids, please place them into a metal can of the same type of metal and pinch the can ends or fold a larger lid back onto the can to hold the smaller lids inside.

Aluminum can be placed in your curbside recycling bin, or in the metal recycling bin at the SWMC.

June is . Safety is our number one priority at Delaware County Department of Public Works, both for our employees and the community at large which we serve.

On the job, we require our employees to undergo continuous safety training, whether it is about everyday procedures or new topics that arise. Personal safety gear is an obvious safety precaution that we take daily. Hard hats, brightly colored and reflective vests or clothing, safety goggles, appropriate hand and footwear-every small detail can make the difference between a close call and a major accident.

National Safety Month brings awareness to the hazards all around us every day.

Work zone safety is not just a matter of caution - it's a matter of life and death. Our crews are out there every day, working inches from speeding traffic to maintain the roads we all rely on.

Please drive responsibly. Slow down. Stay alert. Move over. Lives depend on it!

United States highway design was greatly influenced by World War I and the exponential increase in motor vehicle usage during that time. The War tied up many of the railroads when it began in 1917 and during the following years, leaving no room for goods and people on railway transport.

Nearly all roads in 1917 were barely maintained, narrow and unpaved. This became a problem when goods were moved from the trains to heavy trucks that had to run on the dirt roads.

"This tremendous highway burden reached its peak at the worst possible time: during the spring thaw of 1918. The results were catastrophic. In Delaware, the Philadelphia Pike was reduced from a good bituminous macadam road to a rutted quagmire by the passage of a single 100-truck convoy."

Imagine trying to not only drive in a car from 1917, but also drive on rutted, muddy roads!

In response to the road crisis, Congress passed the Federal Aid Road Act of 1916, along with an additional appropriation of Federal aid dollars in 1919 to the original amount and States' matching dollars, which resulted in a fund for highway departments.
