Hurricane shutters are an important part of storm preparation, but leaving them closed when there is not a storm threat can create a serious safety concern.
Closed shutters may block an emergency escape route for you and your family and can make it more difficult for firefighters to quickly access your home during an emergency.
When a hurricane watch or warning threatens, secure your home.
When the threat has passed, open your shutters and make sure your escape routes remain accessible.
Storm protection should never become a fire safety hazard.
