Delta County Lifts Stage 1 Fire Restrictions – September 18th
-------
Delta, CO - Effective Friday, September 18, 2026, Delta County will be rescinding all Stage 1 fire restrictions for Delta County including the Crawford and Sweitzer Lake State Parks and those municipalities which adopted and followed Delta County restrictions. Following a shift in weather patterns and heavy rainfall across the region along with cooler temperatures and higher humidity; the Sheriff after consultation with emergency management and regional fire management personnel across the region has decided to rescind Fire Restrictions.

The decision aligns with fire restriction indices produced by our partners at the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management and neighboring counties.

While restrictions are being lifted, the Sheriff’s Office and fire management partners would like to remind all residents, campers and hunters coming to Delta County to remain vigilant and to be fire wise to help prevent unintentional wildfires from starting this fall.

Careless actions such as throwing a lit cigarette out of a vehicle, dragging trailer chains or failing to fully extinguish a campfire may lead to a fire. Additionally, farmers and ranchers who want to conduct open burning must adhere to Ordinance 2024-02 Delta County Open Burning and Local Fire Restriction Ordinance, which defines what is and is not legal in Delta County and which types of burning require a permit from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment such as slash piles.

Remember, you MUST call the Delta County Burn Line at 970-399-2955 BEFORE starting any burn to check for any daily restrictions and to record your name, address of the burn and contact information so 9-1-1 dispatch and fire protection districts know where controlled burns are taking place.

After careful consideration of current local and regional conditions, the Delta Volunteer Fire Department in coordination with the City, have decided to postpone the July 4th fireworks display. Public safety is our highest priority and this is the safest course of action for our community. A rescheduled date has not yet been determined and will depend on future variables.

In light of the current fire risk, Stage 2 Fire Restrictions are now in effect throughout Delta County. We encourage everyone to familiarize themselves with the restrictions and do their part to help prevent wildfires. Learn more here: https://deltacountyco.gov/138/Fire-Restrictions

Additionally, City Council has scheduled a Special Meeting tonight, Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 6:30 p.m., to discuss the sale of fireworks within Delta city limits.

As wildfires continue to impact communities across the Western Slope, many of us are experiencing smoky skies and unhealthy air quality here in Delta County. While we hope conditions improve soon, now is the perfect time to take a few simple steps to protect your health and prepare your household.

Wildfire smoke can affect everyone, but it can be especially difficult for children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those living with asthma, COPD, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions. If the smoke is heavy, consider limiting time outdoors, keeping windows and doors closed, and following local air quality recommendations.

Just as important, take a few minutes to make sure you're prepared if conditions change. Have a plan, know multiple evacuation routes, keep your vehicle fueled, gather important medications and documents, and don't forget to include your pets in your emergency planning.

Prepared communities save lives.

We also encourage everyone to check in on family members, friends, and neighbors who may need a little extra help during periods of poor air quality or an evacuation. A simple phone call or knock on the door can make a meaningful difference.

Thank you for helping keep Delta County safe by staying informed, being prepared, and looking out for one another.

Stay safe, everyone.
