⭐We in the Special Collections are honoring the life of actress Eva Marie Saint.

Hollywood has gotten less golden as actress Eva Marie Saint has passed away at 102. Her career spanned seven decades, garnering her an Oscar, a BAFTA, an Emmy, and TWO stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. At the time of her death, Saint was one of the earliest and oldest living Academy Award winners and one of the last surviving stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood.

In this video clip from 1961, Saint had a stop in DFW on her way to Austin and spoke with reporters about a slip of the tongue back in 1960, proving that even actress are still human.

📸 Half a century ago, as part of an oral history project, fine arts photographer Dee Azadian and volunteer field researchers spent months interviewing and recording the senior residents of Caldwell County.

That book, archival photographs, and interviews today live on as the Caldwell County Photography and Oral History Collection at the University of North Texas Libraries Special Collections. 📚

📰 The images that the Texas Observer reprints here mark the occasion of the project’s 50th anniversary and the full collection can be viewed online.

🎂Wishing Mr. Walkman, aka Nobutoshi Kihara, a happy 100th birthday! 📼

Nobutoshi Kihara, the engineer known as “the wizard of Sony,” would have turned 100 today. He is recognized for his work on the original Walkman cassette-tape player. While at Sony, Kihara also worked on Japan's first magnetic tape recorders, portable tape recorders, music stereo systems, Betamax video, digital cameras, a compact cassette magazine-type recorder and Japan's first transistor radio. 📻

What better way to honor Mr. Kihara than sharing this clip with reporter Tim Smith, originally recorded on a beta cassette tape, on the essentials of a vacation in the 80s, including The Walkman. 🎶

🦅Eppy returns to display for Halloween collection at The UNT CoLab!

"Supposedly the victim of a kidnapping, a messiah of academic fortune and an afterthought that was left in a University Union stairwell for some time. Eppy, with his crooked yellow eyes, has seen it all." -Marley Roberson, North Texas Daily.

Don't miss your chance to see Eppy in person while you can! When he is not on display he will be in storage. The display run will until October 31, 2026.

❗Collection Preview: Bobbie Wygant’s ..movie swag!?

🌟Bobbie Wygant began her career at DFW’s WBAP-TV, now known as KXAS-NBC5, in 1948, before the station even hit airwaves! Her long career as an entertainment news personality led her to not only meet all the biggest movie stars, but also to receive heaps of swag, from all the biggest movies. That is pretty cool. ⭐

📦Our lead preservationist Jobe, in his latest blog post, shares his experiences creating housing for all the unique swag from Wygant's collection. Check it out now and see even more cool swag documented: https://blogs.library.unt.edu/special-collections/2026/10/02/collection-preview-bobbie-wygants-movie-swag/

🦅Tonight, tonight, tonight! The Legend Of Eppy opening reception!

In partnership with The UNT CoLab, join us for the opening reception of The Legend of Eppy and Other Artifacts of Lore on Friday, October 2 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. to explore the history of some of the strangest and bizarre objects in UNT Special Collections. This is one “lore drop” you won’t want to miss. 🕷

Every artifact has a story, and sometimes the story is so creepy, weird, or fascinating it becomes lore. 🕸

❗️The exhibition will be on view from October 2 - 31 at The UNT CoLab, 207 N. Elm St., Ste. 101, Denton, TX 76201. Hope to see you there!

Imagine being one of the first Texans to gather around a television set! On September 27th, 1948, WBAP-TV in Fort Worth became the first television station in Texas to begin broadcasting, marking the start of a new era in communication and entertainment across the state. Early television brought everything from local news and sporting events to live performances directly into Texans' homes, forever changing how people stayed informed and connected. This 1948 advertisement for WBAP-TV captures a snapshot of this station and the excitement surrounding its arrival. It is part of the KXAS-NBC 5 News Collection in the UNT Libraries Special Collections.
