The importance of diversity and core values are prominently expressed at W.S. Ryan have a number of opportunities to showcase their talents in and out of the classroom. Several teachers volunteer to sponsor after-school clubs, such as Running Club, Choir, Green Team (environmental club), Yearbook Club, and ASL (sign language) club. School administrators also recognize Rockin’ Wranglers –students who go above and beyond and show great growth in their goals – before their peers at school assembly each semester. Teachers host classroom celebrations to highlight students' progress in literacy. This process helps the children build their self-esteem and fosters a positive learning environment at the school.

Coach Caldwell nominated Mrs. Smith as our next Teacher of the Week!

Here is what Coach Caldwell had to say about Mrs. Smith!

Mrs. Smith teaches our bilingual first-grade class, and she is without a doubt one of the most patient, understanding, and genuinely caring people I have met.
Her class this year came into first grade after experiencing many teacher transitions in kindergarten. Mrs. Smith has done a phenomenal job giving these students the consistency and stability they needed while helping them catch up academically. But what I think is even more important is the work she has done teaching them the foundational pieces of what it means to be a student—how to treat others, how to respect their teachers, how to make good choices, and how to be part of a classroom community.
On top of that, this year she has 12 boys and 5 girls! These boys gave us a run for our money in PE last year! But this year, I have watched them grow so much already. Students who struggled with expectations last year are now walking through the halls, coming to PE, and interacting with others with so much more maturity. We have very few struggles with these students now, and I truly believe that reflects the time, patience, consistency, and relationships Mrs. Smith has invested in them.
For years here at Ryan, Mrs. Smith has built a classroom community where students know that they are loved, valued, and expected to do their best. She teaches them to be respectful and kindhearted while also holding them accountable. She doesn't just teach first-grade academics—she teaches children how to be good humans and good members of our school community.
Mrs. Smith is quiet, and because of that, I don't think she always gets the recognition she deserves. She isn't someone who is going to seek out the spotlight or share the incredible work she is doing. That's why I love what we're doing in recognizing each other, because Mrs. Smith is a teacher who truly deserves to be seen and known by all!

Shout out to our Teacher of the Week - Coach Caldwell! Here’s what Mrs. May has to share about her:

Brandi is our PE coach, but she is so much more than that. She has created such a fun, safe, and welcoming environment for our kids. Of course they are learning PE skills, but they are also learning how to be good sports, good teammates, kind to each other, and just good people.

She is also such a huge support to teachers. When students have a conflict in PE (as competitive situations sometimes bring about), Brandi takes the time to talk with the students, get to the bottom of what happened, and help them work through it. She is fair, she listens, and she takes things seriously when they need to be taken seriously. That support means a lot to both the students and the teachers who work with her.

Brandi is also taking on our WSR GOAL program, and I am so excited to see what she does with it. She understands that the program is about so much more than soccer. It is about leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and helping kids grow into strong young people. I know she will take it exactly where it is meant to go.

And honestly, Brandi is just one of those people everyone loves being around. She is kind, dependable, positive, and so funny. She can make kids and adults laugh, but she also knows when to be serious and when something needs her full attention.

Students love her. Teachers love her. Parents love her. She brings so much to WSR, and we are very lucky to have her.

Here’s what Ms. Onstead had to share about our “Teacher of the Week,” Mrs. May!!!

Monica is someone I look up to tremendously and feel so inspired by! She is extremely knowledgeable and quick to develop thoughtful plans and strategies that make learning more successful and meaningful for her students. Her depth of knowledge is evident in the way she approaches instruction, problem-solving, and student growth. She has an incredible understanding of both the instructional and personal needs of her students, and she consistently uses that knowledge to make learning intentional, purposeful, and accessible.

Beyond her instructional expertise, Monica has an inviting personality that makes everyone around her feel comfortable and connected. She has a natural ability to bring peace, perspective, and positivity into the classroom and our school. Monica has a special gift for creating an environment where people feel seen, valued, and cared for. She brings not only knowledge and expertise to education, but also warmth, joy, and a sense of community!

Monica creates and fosters genuine, personal relationships with each of her students. She truly knows her students, celebrates their successes, and makes each child feel valued and supported. She approaches everything with a smile, brings positivity into all situations, and creates a classroom environment that feels warm, welcoming, and safe. She doesn't just make her classroom a place for learning; she makes it feel like home.

Congratulations, Mrs. May! We are so glad you’re a Wrangler! 🤍
