For Recovery Month, Sedgwick resident and Peer Support Specialist Jack Devie shared his perspective on the importance of reaching out and finding support in articles shared by the Akron News-Reporter and Julesburg Advocate.

Jack highlights the value of having someone who will listen without judgment and help connect people to resources and support. His experience as a Peer Support Specialist reminds us that there is no single path to recovery, and sometimes the first step is simply knowing someone is willing to show up and listen. Jack draws on his personal experiences and shares the stories of two local individuals who have engaged with peer support on their recovery journeys.

Check out these excerpts from the Akron News and Julesburg Advocate to read Jack’s article, “Recovery Month: Don’t Be Afraid to Reach Out,” and head to LiftTheLabel.org/stories to watch a video of Jack talking about his recovery journey.

“One thing I’ve learned is that people don’t need judgment. They need someone to show up and to listen."

In recognition of Recovery Month, Sedgwick, Colorado resident Jack Devie wrote an article for The Sterling Journal-Advocate (Journal-Advocate) to highlight the importance of finding the right support system when seeking recovery from addiction. One way is to connect with a Peer Support Specialist, like Jack. Peer Support Specialists help connect others with programs, resources, and judgment-free support. The 988 Mental Health Line and support groups for loved ones like Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) are additional ways anyone can access the support they need.

Being a listening ear and reminding someone that there are many paths to recovery can make all the difference. Read Jack's article and hear two individuals share their personal experiences with Peer Support on the Sterling Journal Advocate website https://www.journal-advocate.com/2026/09/10/recovery-month-dont-be-afraid-to-reach-out/

This International Overdose Awareness Day, we pause to remember and honor the lives of those lost to overdose. We recognize the families, friends, and communities who continue to carry their memory, and we stand with them.

Today is also an opportunity to learn how to use naloxone, a medication that rapidly reverses an overdose. Learning how to recognize an overdose and carrying naloxone can make a life saving difference. Take a few moments to familiarize yourself with how to use it. You never know when your knowledge could help someone in need.

Together, we can honor those we've lost by raising awareness, supporting one another, and helping prevent future overdoses.
