Clerk Paul López issued the following statement today after Governor Polis signed HB26-1113, which modernizes Colorado's election laws and practices, into law:

"Election procedure cleanup bills are usually routine, but in a time where bad actors are threatening the very foundations of our democratic processes, they become vital lifelines. This bill strengthens our election system by improving access, clarifying procedures, and ensuring counties have clear standards when unexpected issues arise. Our focus remains the same: every eligible voter should have a fair, clear, and secure path to the ballot and this legislation ensures that process stays resilient against outside interference.”

"I am disgusted by the lack of spine that Governor Jared Polis has exhibited with this act today, but also his willingness to fall in line with Trump's dangerous, calculated undermining of free and fair elections in this country."

Clerk Paul López issued the following statement after Gov. Jared Polis granted former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters clemency:

“Our elections are already under assault by the Trump administration and Americans deserve protectors of our democracy, not accomplices in its demise. I am disgusted by the lack of spine that Governor Polis has exhibited with this act and with his willingness to fall in line with a calculated undermining of free and fair elections.

His decision emboldens those who wish to damage our democratic process by sending the message that they can get away with it. It undermines people’s confidence in elections and the justice system, just as we are headed into a highly contested November midterm election.”

Clerk López reiterated that "letter carriers make democracy happen in Denver and across the nation. Each one of you are trusted and honored and we stand in solidarity with you. On behalf of elections workers across the nation, thank you in advance."
