Also on this day…
On August 11, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed into law the American Indian Religious Freedom Act. Being allowed to freely exercise our right to pray and conduct tribal ceremonies in our own homeland seems strange, but this law allowed us to openly dance, sing, and pray as our grandfathers did without retribution… Each day I hear of people in Indian Country contracting COVID-19, and sadly, many tribal elders with the virus dying before their time. This disease is deadly and it is real, please continue to do what you can to help slow the spread and practice healthy habits as much as possible. The Creator gave each of us a brain and a will to make choices. Ask for strength and wisdom through prayer in your own way and help everyone by washing hands regularly, practice social distancing and please, please, please, wear a mask in public places...

Rick Waters
On this day…
On August 11, 1680 the Pueblo Rebellion took place in New Mexico under the leadership of a Tewa named Pope’. It was a strategic plan in which as many Spanish missions as possible were attacked on the same day (it was also recorded as happening on August 10). This organized uprising of the Pueblo people against Spanish colonizers resulted in driving out the Spanish in what is present day New Mexico… Today, strategically planned protests are happening around the country and bringing awareness to the many injustices faced by people of color in our country. Unlike Pope’s Rebellion but still effective, today’s protests are different in that they are planned as non-violent demonstrations. Another way we can effectively make our voices heard is by joining forces and everyone preparing and planning to vote on November 3rd. If you’re not registered to vote, please plan to do so and be prepared to cast your ballot on Election Day 2020…NATIVE VOTES MATTER, NATIVE VOTES COUNT!
Aho,
Rick Waters

A year ago in September, the Denver Indian Center brought REDBONE to town for an outdoor concert at Levitt Pavilion. Because of safety and health concerns due to COVID-19, we will not be sponsoring another outdoor concert this year. We hope to bring another Native American Indian headliner again next year. In the meantime, enjoy this recently released music video of REDBONE!

On August 3, 1948, a New Mexico court ruled in a landmark decision that American Indians were allowed to vote. 78 years ago, Isleta Pueblo member Miguel Trujillo challenged a New Mexico law that had prevented Native Americans from voting...In three months on November 3, 2020, Native American Indians from New Mexico and all across Indian Country will have the right to vote and exercise what many of our forebearers were not allowed by law to do so. If you are not registered to vote, please do in preparation for the upcoming November election. Keep informed of candidate platforms and ballot issues that directly and indirectly affect you and Indian Country...Your voice matters, YOUR VOTE COUNTS...Indian Country Matters.
