On Tuesday, I signed a discharge resolution in an attempt to force consideration of legislation that would give counties and municipalities greater flexibility in addressing obstructions and flood-related hazards in our local waterways. Until our watersheds and streams can be stabilized, the need for addressing stream channel instabilities and resulting maintenance issues must be more flexible and adaptive.

Senate Bill 403, sponsored by Senator Gene Yaw, passed with bipartisan support but has been stuck in the House Environmental and Natural Resource Protection Committee since March of last year.

A discharge resolution is an attempt allowed by House rules to bring the bill to the House floor for consideration and circumvent the committee process.

The legislation would prevent flooding and flood-related damage to infrastructure in critical areas and is a proactive measure that will enhance the safety of our residents, protect our local communities and the environment.

I recently had the opportunity to take a look at the new Pequea Valley School District secondary school building with Superintendent Erik Orndorff, Assistant Superintendent Rich Eby and Principal John Trovato, who will assume the role of superintendent for the 2027-28 school year.

We discussed efforts to prepare for students after graduation through their "First Choice" program, a personalized educational framework designed to guide every student toward their unique post-secondary goal.

Programs like this have helped Pequea Valley graduate a percentage that is higher than the statewide average, and more than double the statewide average in industry-based learning where students where use that information once they leave.

Thank you to the Pequea Valley administration for hosting me for an important discussion and tour of the building.

Pennsylvania faces a severe housing affordability and supply shortage, with housing costs doubling over the past decade and a projected shortfall of 185,000 homes by 2035.

Are there legislative solutions? There is legislation, but not the kind I believe solves anything. Here are my thoughts on how we address this crisis and who needs to step up locally.

The House is back in session this week and I'll be spending the first two days of it with Andrew Peckman, a senior at Linville Hill Christian School, where he is a senior.

Andrew will be shadowing me today and serving as a guest page on the House floor tomorrow (Tuesday).

He plans to go to college and is unsure of his major, but Andrew's getting great exposure to what could be in his future as the school encourages its students to have multiple internship experiences (this is Andrew's 7th and he has two more to schedule before graduation).

Good luck Andrew!

Now that we're into autumn, let's think winter for a moment...

Wreaths Across America has been honoring our country’s veterans since 1992, and volunteers play a huge role in making this happen.

More than three million sponsored veterans' wreaths were placed on headstones of our nation's service members last year at more than 4,900 locations across the country.

On Saturday, Dec. 19, a number of cemeteries in Berks and Lancaster counties - including cemeteries in Denver, Ephrata Township, Kinzers and Reinholds - will be participating in this tremendous event to honor our war dead.

If you are interested in volunteering to lay a wreath, please use the link below and click on the "VOLUNTEER" button to find a participating cemetery near you.

Thank you for considering this tremendous volunteer opportunity.

Route 22 Bridge Update...

Expect traffic delays as the left lane of the Route 222 north bridge over North Church Street in West Earl Township will be closed from 7 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 25) until 6 a.m. next Tuesday, Sept. 29.

This work zone is near the on and off ramps for Route 772 (Brownstown/Rothsville).

Most of the roadwork for this project has been completed; however, lane and possible ramp closures on Route 222 are necessary to finish the remaining items of work.

Fair season continues today in Lancaster County with the West Lampeter Fair getting underway and day two of the Ephrata Fair.

Another successful Denver Fair wrapped up Saturday, and it doesn't come together without these three men and the roles they play - Eden Township Constable Shawn Vincent, Denver Fair President Brad Wolf and Jerry Bartlebaugh from Bartlebaugh Amusements. a 42-year family-owned business out of Centre County.

The Nehemiah Alliance is a nationwide movement calling believers to rebuild the spiritual walls of our nation through united prayer, fasting, and repentance. I had the honor of speaking and lifting up a prayer during its recent news conference at the state Capitol in Harrisburg.
