Healthy eating is one of the best ways to support healthy aging during ! 🍎🥗🥕

Good nutrition can help older adults:
âś” Maintain energy and strength
âś” Support brain and heart health
âś” Keep bones and muscles strong
âś” Manage chronic conditions
âś” Stay independent longer

Healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated or boring. Small changes — like adding more fruits, vegetables, protein, whole grains, and staying hydrated — can make a big difference over time.

This year’s Older Americans Month theme, “Champion Your Health,” reminds us that healthy aging starts with everyday choices that support wellness, independence, and quality of life.

Are you up to date on health screenings and preventive health care? Do you practice daily habits to support your mental health and resilience? This Older Americans Month, communities and individuals alike can take steps to champion health and advance healthy aging!

Throughout the month, CGS encourages older adults, families, and communities to start conversations about what it means to age well and take practical steps to support health and well-being.

Aging well does not happen by chance. It starts with healthy everyday choices, meaningful connections, and access to the right support.

This month we will be sharing information for older adults of all abilities!

Take advantage of older adult programs, many that are free, throughout the Denver metro area. The City of Denver Active Older Adults programs offer FREE membership for adults age 60+, including free access to rec centers, indoor and outdoor pools and weekly fitness classes and clubs.

We encourage you to Share this information with a friend or relative: volunteer to help with arrangements or transportation to help an older adult to take a step towards health and well-being!

🇲🇽 Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Let this festive occasion warm you up on a rainy, snowy Colorado day! In spite of the wet weather, you don’t have to go out to enjoy a little fiesta today—enjoy a celebration at home!
Try something simple like:
• Enjoy your favorite Mexican meal or a festive snack
• Listen to joyful Mexican music
• Add some bold, vivid colors to your day (flowers, clothes, table settings: be creative!)
• Call a friend or family member to share the day!

“The Joint Budget Committee has been working around the clock for months to finalize a budget that meets our constitutional requirements and make thoughtful, evidence-based decisions in a very difficult budget year,” said Judy Amabile, a member of the Joint Budget Committee (D-Boulder).

Thankfully, the Senior Property Tax Homestead Exemption has been saved from the Colorado budget axe!

The Joint Budget Committee was tasked with making very little extra money cover a lot of needs. The Colorado Legislature has made some very difficult decisions that will have significant impacts on many people in Colorado.

Therefore, we encourage our followers to take a moment to send Legislators a "Thank You" for their continued support of the Senior Property Tax Homestead Exemption. The exemption provides a 50% discount on the first $200,000 of value to seniors 65+ who have lived in their own home for ten years or more.

Find your Colorado Legislator here: https://leg.colorado.gov/legislators.

We know it's a tough year for Legislators to balance the budget, but this tax credit helps and empowers hundreds of Colorado older adults to continue to live in their own home and pay their property taxes. For information about this tax credit, see: https://www.senioranswers.org/senior-property-tax-exemption/

We are happy to report that the Joint Budget Committee and, supported by both the Colorado House and Senate, have continued to fully fund the Senior Homestead Property Tax Credit.

What this means is that in 2027, taxpayers will continue to see a discount or tax credit on 2026 property taxes.

We encourage all those who benefit from this credit to reach out to their Legislators to say Thank You! The Senior Homestead Property Tax Credit helps many older adults to continue to live alone with ever-increasing property values that drive increased property taxes.
