SERVING WITH PRIDE: LT. WYATT

Lieutenant Michael Wyatt first started his career with the Denver Police Department 28 years ago. He's also an open member of the LGBTQ+ community but it wasn't alway that way. However, with changing times, he's proud to be a part of a Department that is committed to building an inclusive workforce that represents ALL of Denver’s diverse communities.

And he wants the LGBTQ+ community to know that they are encouraged to join our team! For more information visit DenverPoliceRecruit.com or contact one of the department LGBTQ Liaisons by emailing [email protected].

IT'S GUN VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH 🧡

On January 21, 2013, 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed in Chicago, and in her honor, Hadiya's family and friends began the Wear Orange campaign to advocate for an end to gun violence. The first Wear Orange Day was June 2, 2015, which would have been Hadiya's 18th birthday, and since then the movement has continued to grow. In 2021, the U.S. House of Representatives designated June as Gun Violence Awareness Month.

In Colorado, an average of 900 to 1,000 people die each year due to gun violence, and many more are injured, but these deaths and injuries can be prevented and it starts with responsible gun ownership. Safe storage is a key part of responsible gun ownership. Fi****ms should be stored unloaded in a secured cabinet, safe, or case, and cars, closets, drawers, and shoeboxes are not safe locations. In Colorado, fi****ms must also be safely stored in unattended vehicles. House Bill 24-1348, effective January 1, 2025, prohibits knowingly leaving a handgun in an unattended vehicle unless it is stored in a locked hard-sided container that is not left in plain view or is placed in the locked trunk of the vehicle.

Protect your loved ones and our community by practicing safe firearm storage today, and help put an end to gun violence.

DON'T OVERHEAT YOUR HOUND 🐶☀

This weekend is forecasted to be a scorcher, Denver, and a good time to remind you that your vehicle is not a sitter. Temperatures inside a vehicle can reach 120°F in a matter of minutes, even if temperatures are mild and windows are open and in that same amount of time, a dog can suffer life-threatening heatstroke which can cause organ failure and death.

If you are concerned about a pet locked in a hot car, call 720-913-2080 and familiarize yourself with the Good Samaritan law. The state offers legal immunity for those who break into a locked vehicle to rescue a dog, cat, or an at-risk person. However, to ensure immunity:

🐾 You must believe the animal is in imminent danger of death or serious bodily injury.
🔒 The vehicle must be locked.
🔍 You must make a ‘reasonable effort’ to find the vehicle’s owner.
📞 You must contact the Denver Police Department, Denver Fire or DAP before entering the vehicle.
💪 You cannot use more force than necessary to free the animal.
🚨 If you break a window, you must remain with the animal, and on scene until police or DAP officers arrive.

And those who leave their pet in an overheated car, could be ticketed for animal cruelty, a fine of up to $999 and/or 300 days in jail.

For more tips on keeping your pets safe and healthy, check out Denver Animal Shelter.
