Contrary to popular perception, pollsters predicted the 2016 popular vote fairly accurately. The RCP polling average had Clinton winning the popular vote by 3.2%. Her actual result was +2.1%. However, the pollsters were wrong about Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. Trump swept these three key battleground states with a total of 78,000 votes. What put Trump over the top were people who decided in the final days of the election. Most polls did not capture this surge because they were already completed.

Polls also underweighted voters without a college degree, which underrepresented Clinton support in the Southwest and Trump support in the Rust Belt. Most pollsters have adjusted for college education in 2020.

It is time for a major rethink on conservatism. Here's how we will define it in the post-Trump era.
