Dealing with oversupply?
Sometimes our bodies make more milk than our baby needs. While that may sound like a good thing, oversupply can actually cause challenges—like a fast letdown that makes baby cough, gasp, or pop on and off the breast.
Here are some simple ways to help slow the flow and bring relief for both of you:
💟 Soften the breast before feeding — use gentle massage or hand expression for 1-2 minutes to release the first strong rush of milk. Express the smallest amount needed so your body doesn’t get the signal to make more.
💟 Soothe discomfort — a cold compress can help reduce swelling and fullness.
💟 Try laid-back breastfeeding — reclining or feeding while lying down lets baby control the flow and take breaks when needed.
💟 Let baby lead the feed — think of the first breast as the “meal” and the second as “dessert.” Baby may only want one side — and that’s perfectly okay! Pump the other side only if truly needed for comfort.
💟 Still struggling? A lactation specialist may recommend block feeding to reduce supply, but only do this with guidance.
Most parents see improvements in a day or two, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. Reach out to your WIC office to speak to a lactation specialist for support. Find your WIC clinic's contact information on our website at ColoradoWIC.gov/find-wic-clinic

🐟Canned fish like salmon and tuna.
🍳Eggs and soy products like tofu.
🥑Brussels sprouts and avocados.
Omega-3 fats have also been shown to be important during pregnancy, as they are important building blocks of the fetal brain and retina. These foods can help reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, and support eye health! 💕
