📖 “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently ridiculed the [Black Lives Matter] movement and its demands, quipping ‘woke 1.0 was crazyyyyy,’ while Jacobin writers such as Paul Heideman, Eric Blanc, Ben Burgis, and Dustin Guastella have come out against defund and abolition in the name of what they describe as ‘mass politics.’ Their position is not only profoundly mistaken, but dangerous. Their echoing of ruling-class attacks on abolitionism and support for the police surrenders the ideological ground won by the 2020 rebellion, undermines the struggle against President Trump’s authoritarianism, and impedes the fight for socialism.”

On Friday night about 20 of us continued our monthly protest of the anti-LGBTQ+ coffee shop, The Drip Café. Drip has continued its tactic of inviting various right-wing church congregations to counterprotest us, with this month’s batch being particularly open in their bigotry.

Drip supporters intentionally misgendered trans protesters and mocked one of our members for having a “gay lisp.” Street preachers, using Drip as a base of operation, shouted about how homosexuality is degenerate and q***r people are bound for hell — while also denying the Holocaust happened. (Just because they’re Zionists doesn’t mean they’re not anti-Semites!)

Drip and its supporters pathologically claim to love us, but these religious zealots are fixated with repealing q***r rights and detransitioning trans and non-binary people. It’s unlikely we see most of this batch of reactionaries again — they’re largely protest-tourists, showing up once to snap pics for social media and say they faced off against q***r people, communists, and anarchists.

Protesters confronted the street preachers and booed, jeered, and chanted down the other overt acts of bigotry. The Art Walk crowd was heavily on our side; almost no one patronized Drip while we were there. Passerbys mocked Drip supporters for their bizarre religious pamphlets, and several joined the protest, borrowing signs and flags and joining in chants.

Drip’s crew of far-right content creators was absent this month. Corey Blair of Break the Chains Media claimed he was going to show up to “actively oppose communists” every month, but a dip in views on his Drip videos caused him to dip too. One anti-abortionist with White Rose Resistance brought a body cam and was doing her best to instigate a conflict, but she was too boring for that tactic to go anywhere.

Protests like Friday’s reinforce why we’re there and motivate us to keep going. We aren’t going to let a bigoted coffeeshop church bring reactionaries into the community to harass marginalized people. We aren’t going to allow a beachhead for reactionary organizing to be a feature of downtown Denver. Gay rights are human rights, trans rights are human rights! We’ll always stand against those seeking to demonize and dehumanize the LGBTQ+ community. Come out and join us!

🥷 “The concept of elite capture originated in the study of developing countries to describe the way socially advantaged people tend to gain control over financial benefits, especially foreign aid, meant for others. But the concept has also been applied more generally to describe how political projects can be hijacked in principle or in effect by the well positioned and resourced…the idea also helps to explain how public resources such as knowledge, attention, and values become distorted and distributed by power structures. Elite capture accounts for many of the common objections leveled against identity politics, including that it requires uncritical support for political figures based on their identities without regard for their politics and that it often reflects social preoccupations that are “really for rich white people.”

🌈 Join the Denver Communists 🚩 Notes of Dissent 🎺 Bread & Roses Legal Center 🏴 the Trans Empowerment Alliance ⚧️ and Trans Rescue Network 🏳️‍⚧️ for our monthly protest against the Drip Café, a coffeeshop run by an anti-LGBTQ+, fundamentalist Christian church.

Drip has continued to attract a motley crew of reactionaries who support them — not just fundamentalist homophobes, transphobes, and misogynists, but racists, anti-immigrant xenophobes, Zionists, Islamophobes, anti-choicers, and more.

Last month, some far-right Drip supporters showed up at an anti-ICE high school walk out and provoked students to kick their sorry asses, including by calling them the f-slur. Then they came to the art walk to whine about “the intolerant left” while we laughed at them.

Our monthly protests have evolved into a mix of a picket, an anti-fascist counter-demonstration, and a street party. We always have a good time, whether we are informing people about Drip’s homophobia and transphobia, exchanging sharp words with self-identified bigots, or shooting the s**t with each other and the First Friday Art Walk crowd.

Come through! Every first Friday until Drip closes down for good.

📕 Join Firebrand and the Denver Communists for a study group on Teamster Rebellion by Farrell Dobbs

Farrell Dobbs’ Teamster Rebellion is a brilliant account of one of the great labour battles of the
1930s. The strikes took place in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the United States in 1934. The workers,
who drove trucks for a living, were members of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT)
union. The book explains how the dispute escalated from a strike about union recognition into a major
battle with the employers, the police and the local state. The Minneapolis strikes of 1934 demonstrated the ability of a small Trotskyist organisation to make a breakthrough into the wider labour movement and lead a struggle of to victory. The Minneapolis strikes helped spark the revival of the industrial militancy of the working class of the United States from the depths of the Great Depression. The strikes show how it possible for working class action to win, even in difficult circumstances of economic downturn, anti-union employers and hostile authorities.

The lessons of The Mass Strike — that workers’ strength lies in rank-and-file activity, that even the most vulnerable and unorganized workers can revitalize the labor movement, and that mass strikes, economic and political, will continue to break out as long as capitalism reigns — have been repeatedly played out over the ensuing century. And as capitalism threatens the very globe itself, the final lesson — that socialist politics and organization are essential for converting spontaneous mass strikes into coordinated revolutionary victory — could hardly be more relevant.

200+ Colorado high schools walked out to protest ICE on Friday. Many in Denver rallied at La Alma Park at a great action organized by The Brown Berets Tepetlán, The Youth Coalition, General Strike US, 50501 Colorado, Pulse, People’s March Denver, and dozens of unaffiliated high school students.

A handful of right-wing agitators we’ve had the displeasure of encountering outside Drip Café and at other protests in the past came to taunt the crowd, then whine about it on social media. They were loudly confronted by the young protesters, which we were thrilled to see.

The crowd chanted the right-wingers down with “N4zi scum, off our streets!” and “No Trump, no K*K, no fascist USA!” and followed them around to prevent them from harassing the protest. The kids are alright!

The right-wing agitators who came to clip-farm included:
* Corey Blair of Break the Chains Media
* Wayne Laugesen, rightwing AM radio crank with a podcast called Wayne’s Word
* Jorge Stakis, cameraperson for Laugesen and mediocre content creator in his own right
* Jordan Baldwin (aka Jordan Scott) of First Amendment Media
* one loser with an “I ❤️ ICE” sign

They were particularly obsessed with us — just incensed that we actually call ourselves “communists”? — but it was nothing that a crowd of high schoolers and a protest marching band couldn’t handle.

After taking a big L at the anti-ICE demo, these leeches on liberatory movements volunteered for another by following us to our monthly protest against Drip Café, a few blocks away and a few hours later. But we keep that thang on us — a tuba — so nbd lol
