💙 Celebrating Our Summer of Love 💙

At a recent staff meeting, we took time to celebrate some exciting milestones in the lives of our incredible team members.

Congratulations to Marlen and Christa as they prepare to welcome their new babies, Liz on her upcoming wedding, and Yimalisse on her engagement!

At DCAC, we know that caring for children and families starts with caring for one another. It was a joy to pause, celebrate these special moments, and surround our colleagues with the same support, encouragement, and community they bring to others every day.

Join us in wishing Marlen, Liz, Yimalisse, and Christa all the best as they begin these exciting new chapters. 💕

Every child deserves a safe place to heal.

Because of community support, DCAC is able to provide forensic interviews, mental health treatment, prevention education, family support, and advocacy services at no cost to children and families.

When our community shows up for kids, healing becomes possible. Thank you for being part of that work. 💙

At DCAC, healing happens through time, trust, patience, and connection. It happens when children are supported by caring adults who continue to show up for them again and again.

Kids are incredibly resilient. Even one safe, supportive relationship can make a profound difference in a child’s healing journey. 💙

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re grateful for the therapists, caregivers, advocates, teachers, family members, and community supporters who help children rediscover safety, confidence, and hope every day.

DCAC therapists meet children where they are, helping them engage at their own pace through play, creativity, conversation, and coping skills. Over time, children begin to better understand their feelings, feel safer in their bodies and relationships, and make sense of their experiences in ways that feel manageable and empowering.

Healing doesn’t happen overnight. It happens through patience, consistency, support, and caring adults who show up again and again.

Caregivers are an important part of that process too. DCAC’s Treatment Team works closely with families so they feel equipped to support their child’s healing journey every step of the way.

The goal is never to erase what happened -it’s to help children feel more confident, regulated, and in control of their story.

Can you share a moment or example that reflects the impact of this work?

“I worked with a child who, in the beginning, avoided anything related to why they were in therapy. They kept things light and silly and were quick to change the subject if anything felt too real.

Over time, that started to shift. The avoidance softened, and they began sharing small pieces, first through play and then more directly. They were able to make sense of what had happened in a way that felt more manageable and less overwhelming.

Toward the end of treatment, we spent time reviewing the work they had done, and it was clear how much had changed. They were more confident, more at ease, and able to talk about their experience without shutting down or needing to avoid it. It no longer felt like something that controlled them.

That shift is what stays with me. Not that the experience is gone, but that it holds less power. Seeing a child move from avoidance and overwhelm to feeling steadier and in control is where the impact of this work really shows.“

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re honored to recognize the incredible work of DCAC’s Treatment Team and the healing they help make possible every day. 🩵

What do you wish people understood about children experiencing trauma?

"I wish more people knew that acting out can be a common symptom of trauma. That can look like getting in trouble at school and at home, being irritable, being defiant or rude, limit testing, engaging in risky behaviors etc. Some kids have told me this is because getting in trouble is a distraction from the trauma. Others feel they can’t express their anger to the perpetrator of abuse so it gets misplaced. And some kids don’t know how to express or handle all the complex things they’re feeling." Emma Skok, Bilingual Child and Family Therapist at DCAC

Behind behavior is often a child asking for support, safety, and understanding. 💙

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we honor the work of helping children and caregivers rebuild connection, communication, and trust.
