The U.S. Navy’s First African American Flag Officer
Vice Adm. Samuel Lee Gravely Jr. didn’t just break barriers — he raised the standard. Promoted to Rear Admiral on this day in 1971, Samuel Lee Gravy Jr. became the U.S. Navy’s first African-American flag officer.
Enlisting in 1942 as a fireman apprentice, he served on the submarine chaser PC-1264 and built a 38-year career defined by excellence.
He became:
• The first African American to command a Navy warship (USS Theodore E. Chandler)
• The first to command a ship in combat since the Civil War (USS Taussig, Vietnam)
• The first to command a major warship (USS Jouett)
• And the first African American promoted to flag rank — later Vice Admiral and Commander, Third Fleet (Left is the USS Gravely Arleigh Burke, named in honor of Vice Admiral Burke.)

Hitting the road to honor 250 years of service! ⚓️🏞
As part of the U.S. Navy’s National Parks Navy Week and Road Trip to 250, Sailors from Navy Band Southwest traveled through Southern Utah this week!
Bringing live music and community engagement to stunning national parks — to include a particularly beautiful stop at Zion National Park — along with visits to local schools and university campuses in between.
Grateful to connect with communities amid these natural wonders!

Congratulations to Rowan Veteto on signing her contract! She was selected as one of NTAG Rocky Mountains Immediate Scholarship Reservation (ISR) recipients. The NROTC ISR selection is a prestigious 4-year scholarship awarded directly by commanding officers to highly qualified applicants, allowing them to bypass the national selection board process. With this scholarship Rowan will be attending an NROTC University of her choosing and after graduation will commission as a Naval officer.
