Congratulations to the graduates of the 2026 Broomfield Police Department Community Academy and Teen Academy!
Whether spending 10 weeks diving deep into the department or dedicating an intensive week to learning about law enforcement, these two groups received a behind-the-scenes look at local policing.

From meeting the K-9 Unit and touring the detention center to diving into crime scene investigations, riding along with officers and checking out police cruisers, they experienced it all.

Thank you to all the participants for their enthusiasm, curiosity and support for the Broomfield community. Congratulations to the graduates, and best of luck to the teen academy members in their futures!

From Sunup to Sundown: Day-in-the-Life of an Open Space Staff 🦋

Open Space and Trails may seem self-explanatory, but what IS Open Space and Trails and how is it different from a park? Parks are usually designed for active recreation and social gatherings, featuring amenities like playgrounds, sports fields and manicured lawns. Open Space is primarily preserved for ecological conservation, natural beauty and passive recreation (like hiking or birdwatching) with minimal development. Trails connect neighborhoods to Parks and Open Space and provide the community with a safe alternative mode of transportation.

Spoiler: Staff often spend a majority of their time indoors at a desk, though there are a lot of opportunities to stretch their legs! Here is what a day could look like for an Open Space and Trails employee:

8 a.m.: Respond to emails and any urgent community questions.
8:30 a.m.: Attend a monthly coordination meeting with Broomfield’s Natural Resource Maintenance Team.
9:30 a.m.: Analyze trail counter data from select Broomfield trails to understand usage patterns.
11 a.m.: Meet with the E-Bike Taskforce to discuss educational materials for youth and parents.
Noon: Quick lunch and a screen-free walk through The Field Open Space next to our offices.
1 p.m.: Provide comments on a Site Development Plan for a new hospital to address trail connections and wildlife.
2 p.m.: Install temporary signage about coyote activity to respond to an escorting incident.
3:30 p.m.: Zoom with our community partner, Butterfly Pavilion, to discuss pollinator plant ideas for an upcoming restoration project.
4:30 p.m.: Send out a reminder email about the upcoming volunteer coyote crew training.
5 p.m.: End the day writing a creative blurb for our upcoming July Open Space and Trails newsletter.
6 p.m.: Attend the Open Space and Trails Advisory Committee (OSTAC) public meeting.

No two days are the same, and just when you think you’ve seen it all, there are always new surprises waiting.
