As Geothermal Heats Up in US States, Key Policy Levers Can Advance Its Next Generation 05/20/2026

A recent deep dive by the World Resources Institute (WRI) highlights how Colorado is leading the U.S. in geothermal policy and incentives. By moving beyond "planning" and into "action," the state has already deployed four rounds of funding to bridge the gap between traditional energy and next-gen geothermal.

From funding innovative drilling at dairy farms and former oil sites to backing feasibility studies with pioneers like Fervo and Eavor, Colorado’s mix of tax credits and grant programs is the blueprint for a decarbonized grid.

📢Important Funding Update: Colorado’s Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR) Single-Family Program

The HEAR Single-Family Program is now closed for Region 1 (the Front Range, which includes the following counties: Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Clear Creek, Denver, Douglas, Elbert, El Paso, Gilpin, Jefferson, Larimer, Teller, and Weld) and is now closed.

➡️ Good news for Region 2! If you live in any other county, the program is still open! Applications are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until funding runs out. Find a registered contractor in your area to apply.

The Colorado Energy Office (CEO) is excited to announce a total of $12.4 million in funding awarded from the Colorado Geothermal Energy Tax Credit Offering (GETCO) and the Geothermal Energy Grant Program (GEGP). The programs provide refundable, merit-based tax credits to support eligible geothermal projects in Colorado–from developing and producing geothermal electricity, installing a thermal energy network, to conducting a thermal energy network study.

These awardees include school districts, universities, hospitals, local governments, and power developers.

🔥GETCO cycle 5 awardees:
- The Memorial Hospital: $18,329
- McKinstry Essention, LLC: $1.3 million
- Aspen School District: $5 million
- Adams State University: $4.3 million
- Town of Hayden: $978,871

🔥GEGP final recipients are:
- Fervo Energy: $988,000
- ZGEO: $612,000

As part of Governor Polis’ nation-leading Heat Beneath Our Feet initiative, these projects will advance geothermal technology in the Mountain West.

We are looking for two distinct roles to support our Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP):

⚡Community Engagement & Workforce Development: Focus on communications, stakeholder engagement, and building climate workforce opportunities.

⚡Data Management & Analysis: Focus on data-driven decision-making, quality assurance, and program administration.

This is a unique chance to gain hands-on experience with state government and community workforce sectors through national service while making a real impact in Colorado.
