The Iowa Department of Transportation is warning residents of recent text scams that many are encountering. These messages appear to come from the Iowa DOT (or “DMV”) and are targeting recipients with false claims of unpaid traffic violations. Individuals are also receiving fraudulent Iowa DOT-generated text messages stating that they have an unpaid toll or registration fee.

THESE ARE FRADULENT MESSAGES! DO NOT CLICK ON LINKS! DO NOT PROVIDE ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION!

Remember, the Iowa DOT does not send out fee collection reminders via text, and will never text customers asking for private or financial information.

Any payment requests from the Iowa DOT are made through a personal transaction, via physical mail, or through an online transaction initiated by the customer. In addition, the Iowa DOT does not collect tolls on any roads or bridges.

If you have received this type of message, report the message as spam on your smartphone, block the number, and delete the message. If you have fallen victim to any scam, please call your local law enforcement agency to file a report.
