When it comes to reentry, youth are the experts!

Each year, staff from the Iowa Department of Human Rights, Division of Criminal and Juvenile Justice Planning facilitate the Talking Wall in group care and juvenile detention facilities across Iowa. The Talking Wall solicits input directly from youth involved in the juvenile justice system about ways the juvenile justice system can be improved and reentry from group care enhanced. This approach affirms that lived experience is an expertise needed to inform policy and decision-making.

The Iowa Department of Human Rights, Division of Criminal & Juvenile Justice Planning, is a proud recipient of Second Chance Act Youth Offender Reentry Program funding from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). This grant funding supports statewide coordination and planning for Iowa’s juvenile justice reentry system to ensure youth are successful and thriving upon reentry/return into their communities.

The Iowa Department of Human Rights is hiring two part-time summer AmeriCorps members to serve as Youth Development Specialists. This role will assist with the development and implementation of multiple youth initiatives, including the Youth Justice Council, NYTD Ambassadors, and Youth Action Squads and advancing authentic youth engagement within state agencies (job description: https://bit.ly/3uYW8lI). The Iowa Youth Congress (IYC) provides an opportunity for high school students from around the state to discuss issues that affect youth and develop legislative ideas. Students from diverse backgrounds learn about state and local government, advocacy, and civic engagement and gain valuable leadership skills such as public speaking, problem solving, and debate. IYC is modeled after the Iowa House of Representatives and accepts up to 100 high school participants.
