Harvest is a busy time of year for everyone supporting the agriculture community. Today, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig visited with farmers and workers at Key Cooperative in Grinnell about grain quality and the ag economy. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig today announced that the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has begun construction on four new abandoned mine land (AML) reclamation projects in Mahaska and Marion Counties. The four projects encompass approximately 150 acres and represent nearly $4.9 million in new water quality and soil conservation work.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig commented on today's Iowa Crop Progress and Condition report, which was released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service. The report is released weekly April through November. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship also provides a weekly weather summary.

During the Iowa State Fair, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig announced a major expansion of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship's popular Iowa Working Lands conservation program. The initial funding was allocated in just 10 days!
The Iowa Working Lands program provides cost-share to help farmers and landowners convert underperforming or highly erodible acres of row crops into pasture or hay ground, supporting the growth of the U.S. beef herd while reducing soil erosion and improving water quality. Since the pilot project began in Taylor County in 2016, more than 1,800 farmers have participated and we've converted 20,000 acres of underperforming row crops into pasture or hay. While in central Iowa Friday, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig toured the Smith Wetland at Lake Panorama. The project is a great example of how the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship works with partners, such as the Lake Panorama Rural Improvement Zone, to co-invest in lasting measures to protect water quality and improve wildlife habitat. Next he toured the Atlantic Locker where they discussed the Choose Iowa Butchery Equipment Only grants program, which provides small-scale meat processors and custom lockers with funding to purchase equipment that expands processing capacity in Iowa. He also enjoyed a quick lunch at Wasted Grain Bar & Grill in Carroll, named Iowa's Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin for 2026 by Iowa Pork.

Fall is a busy time of year for fieldwork. Iowa State University recommends waiting until the 4” soil temperature is at least 50°F and falling to apply nutrients to fields. Applying too early can negatively impact productivity, profitability and water quality. Remember to base the timing of your applications on soil temperatures and the 6- to 10-day weather forecast, rather than dates on the calendar.

The 162-acre Pella North and South abandoned mine site, located a mile south of Pella, is part of the Pella Wildlife Management Area that is owned and managed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The project is also the largest single-contract abandoned mine land reclamation project in IDALS’ history.

IDALS' reclamation work is removing dangerous piles, embankments and highwalls, treating acidic water, and restoring a damaged stream channel. The project also includes 1.34 million cubic yards of excavation, 150 acres of native grass seeding, 23,000 feet of terraces, and six acres of wetlands. The terraces, wetlands, and meandering stream will help slow, filter, and capture water before it leaves the site. Once fully restored this winter, the public land will provide improved wildlife habitat and enhanced recreational opportunities for Iowans. Thanks to the Iowa DNR for their partnership on this important project.
