May was a record-breaking month for us!
People from all across Iowa needed help, and in just 31 days, we admitted 1,015 birds to our care.
If you look at the graph, you'll notice a huge spike in admissions in mid-May, culminating in a record-breaking day when we took in 80 birds in a single day.
How are we able to care for so many patients?
First, we are incredibly fortunate to have an amazing team of dedicated volunteers. This summer, we are also being supported by 11 college interns who are helping us meet the demands of baby bird season.
Second, none of this would be possible without the generosity of our supporters. Donations from the public allow us to keep our doors open, provide specialized medical care, purchase food and supplies, and remain available whenever a bird is in need.
The reality is that our admission numbers continue to climb, and we don't expect things to slow down anytime soon. That's why your support is more important now than ever.
We're challenging our community to help us raise $5,000 in just 5 days.
Every dollar helps provide food, medicine, housing, and lifesaving care for Iowa's wild birds.

Rare patient alert! 🚨
A Common Gallinule!
This gorgeous bird was discovered at the Hardee’s drive-thru apparently trying to order a burger when a concerned citizen called us for help. 🍔
Okay… not really. But he was stuck near the building in a very awkward and busy area, looking quite confused and out of place. Fortunately, after examination, he appeared healthy overall. We suspect he was simply disoriented and needed a safe place to rest and recover.
Over the next few days, we treated him to an unlimited buffet of tasty food options while he regained his bearings. Once he was ready, he was successfully released back into the wild where he belongs.
What an incredibly unique and beautiful bird! Just look at those enormous toes and that striking red face shield — perfectly designed for walking across floating vegetation in wetlands.

Baby American Crows. 🖤
Yep — these are some of the cutest giant babies around. With their huge bright pink mouths, striking blue eyes, and surprisingly large size, many people who find them think they are already adults!
American Crows tend to nest earlier in the season and usually raise just one clutch of babies each year. Because of that, we do not admit large numbers of them annually, making each little crow patient extra special to us.
Crows are incredibly intelligent, curious, and full of personality, and we thoroughly enjoy every opportunity we get to care for these amazing birds while they grow strong enough to return to the wild.
