On October 13, 2026, at approximately 4:05pm, Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 4300 block of NE 102nd Avenue for a reported crash involving a vehicle and a train.

The driver of the vehicle was transported to a local hospital with suspected serious injuries. No injuries were reported to the train operator.

The roadway at the railroad crossing is expected to remain closed for the next several hours as Union Pacific personnel conduct operations at the scene.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is selling pink patches for Breast Cancer Awareness Month - and every patch sold helps honor survivors, support fighters, and remember loved ones. All proceeds go to John Stoddard Cancer Center here in Iowa.

And of course, K9 Beau will be helping us spread the word - mostly because he knows no one can resist him, and he’s using that power for good.

Patches are available at Field Headquarters, 5995 NE 14th Street, Des Moines, IA 50313, Monday–Friday during business hours, for $5.00. You can also connect with Community Relations at [email protected].

On October 5, 2026, at approximately 6:30 p.m, Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 100 block of NW Aurora Avenue for a reported stabbing.

Arriving deputies located an adult male with an apparent stab wound. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

One individual has been detained and the investigation remains ongoing. There is no known threat to the community at this time.

There are no further details to release at this time. Additional information will be provided when available.

This past week, Deputy Cappelle and K9 Bax, along with Deputy Dawson and K9 Damon, attended the Heart of America Police Dog Association’s (HAPDA) annual K9 certification. K9 teams from across Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri spent the week earning certifications in patrol and narcotics detection. Afterward, the teams competed in several events against nearly 30 K9 teams.

Deputy Cappelle and K9 Bax took 1st Place in the Master Tracker Competition after completing an advanced track through wet, dense, and heavily populated areas, combined with creek crossings and steep elevation changes.

Deputy Dawson and K9 Damon took 1st Place in the Patrol Dog Competition, where the teams were tested in obedience, bite work, and handler tactics. Following their first-place finish, K9 Damon went on to take 3rd Place in the Detector Dog Competition after completing an advanced detection scenario.

The PCSO K9 Unit continues to impress on and off the streets, with K9s Bax and Damon having nearly 600 deployments under their collars in their first three years of service, along with the continued rigorous training it takes to be crowned top dogs in their categories.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Candy Crawl, held in partnership with the Grimes Fall Festival.

We enjoyed seeing so many families and members of our community come out and enjoy the day with us. A special thank you to all of the agencies, organizations, volunteers, and community partners who served alongside us and helped make this event possible.
