The Commercial Motor Vehicle Unit (CMVU) falls under the Iowa State Patrol, which is one of seven Divisions under the Iowa Department of Public Safety. - Inspecting commercial vehicles and drivers to determine compliance with state and federal laws relating to driver qualification, hours of service, driver licensing, vehicle size and weight, and vehicle safety compliance.

- Protecting Iowa’s highway system and infrastructure through the enforcement of size, weight, and cargo laws.

- Providing training to the motor carrier industry, social groups, law enforcement, and other governmental groups.

- Assisting other law enforcement officers when requested or when the situation dictates.. If you have an emergency, please call 911. Governor Reynolds has signed a proclamation, in line with an executive order issued by President Donald Trump, suspending penalties for on-road dyed diesel use. This proclamation temporarily suspends regulatory provisions of Iowa Code Section 452A.74A(1) that restricts the use of dyed diesel for highway transportation in motor vehicles hauling soybeans, corn, hay, straw, silage, stover, fertilizer (dry, liquid, and gas), manure (dry and liquid), and distillers grains.

Regulatory provisions from the sale and use of such fuel for the same use are also temporarily suspended.

This proclamation is valid on all roadways in Iowa and expires Feb 2, 2027.

Here we have a flat tire and a blown tire on the same side of a semi-trailer. Additionally, with the dual sets reduced to a single tire, each of the single tires were overloaded by more than 2,000lbs. Had the driver not been stopped, additional tires could have failed.

One of our CMVU Troopers working the evening shift this week stopped a truck for bypassing an open weigh station. During the inspection, our Trooper discovered an inoperative brake on the semi-trailer. Additional out of service violations were discovered on the truck, including an inoperative air pressure gauge and a steer tire with exposed cords.

Recently, one of our CMVU Troopers discovered an air reservoir tank on a semi-trailer that had separated from its attachment point at one end. If left unnoticed, it could have resulted in additional equipment damage. Additionally, a tire recently failed, leaving debris near the brake chamber pushrod. Please take a few moments to look underneath your trailer before beginning your day.
