Today marks the first day of Fire Prevention Week!👨‍🚒

This week, we encourage you to take time to:
•Test your smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries as needed.
•Make sure smoke alarms are installed on every level of your home and inside bedrooms.
•Create and practice a home fire escape plan with everyone in your household.
•Identify two ways out of every room, when possible.
•Keep exits and escape routes clear of clutter.

Small steps today can make a lifesaving difference tomorrow. Stay fire safe!

On Tuesday, September 29, we proudly welcomed three new firefighters to the fire service.

Congratulations to Michael Donnelly, Alfredo Lombardi, and William Peisker as they begin their careers serving and protecting our community. Please join us in welcoming them to the Des Plaines Fire Department! 👏

On Friday, September 11, the City of Des Plaines held a special Patriot Day ceremony commemorating the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

The ceremony brought together the Des Plaines Fire and Police Departments, elected officials, City staff, residents, and community members to honor those affected by the attacks and remember the lives lost.

A video of the ceremony is now available to view. Thank you to everyone who joined us in this meaningful remembrance.

If you’ve driven along Oakton Street recently, you may have noticed that the City of Des Plaines is getting ready to welcome a brand-new Fire Station 62 in 2027!

The original station was built in 1955 and served the community for more than seven decades before being decommissioned earlier this year. In its place will be a modernized Fire Station 62, more than twice the size of its predecessor. Mayor Andrew Goczkowski caught up with Fire Chief Matt Matzl to discuss the redesign and provide a construction update.

Follow along for additional updates and learn more about the project at desplainesil.gov/firestation62.

⚠️ WEATHER & AIR QUALITY ALERT

The Des Plaines Fire Department encourages the community to stay safe and take precautions as extreme weather continues. High temperatures, combined with smoke from Canadian wildfires, have created very unhealthy air quality in our area.

If possible, stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces, keep windows and doors closed, and limit outdoor activity until air quality improves. Be sure to check on family, friends, neighbors and anyone who may be especially vulnerable.

Stay informed, stay cool, and stay safe.

If needed, visit the cooling centers listed below.

- Covered walkway between City Hall and the Police Department (1420 Miner St.) – Open until 5 p.m. today

- Des Plaines Public Library (1501 Ellinwood St.) – Open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m, Monday through Friday

- Des Plaines Park District – Prairie Lakes Community Center (515 E. Thacker St.) – Open 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday
