Press Conference Denouncing Police Violence and Misconduct against Alonzo Lee-Perkins

Detroit – On Tuesday, October 20th community members, activists, and elected officials will gather at the Spirit of Detroit at 4pm for a press conference to speak out against the egregious acts of police violence and misconduct experienced by Alonzo Lee-Perkins in downtown Detroit on June 22nd and call for greater accountability and transparency from the Detroit Police Department.
Community members and activists will be calling for the firing and prosecution of Detroit Police Officer David Gonzalez and demanding that the Wayne County Prosecutor Office drop their charges against Alonzo Lee-Perkins, who was unlawfully approached by police officers before they shot him in the back.
The recently released body cam footage of DPD officer David Gonzalez does not show an officer in fear of his life, but one with the intent to harm a young man, who ran away in fear of his life. And when you hear the language Officer Gonzalez uses before he shoots Alonzo, it is clear that Alonzo’s fear is justified.
Additionally, some speakers at the press conference will speak to the wider issue of over-policing of Black youth in Detroit and how the hysteria raised around the Teen Takeovers contributed to the aggressive behavior of Officer Gonzalez.
